Job summary
We are inviting applications to fill our Clinical Fellow vacancy at The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust in Department of Paediatric Intensive Care. This post will commence as soon as possible and is fixed term for one year.

Candidates must be fully registered with the General Medical Council and hold a license to practice by the intended start date.

Main duties of the job
Whilst on rotation on PICU in Leeds the postholder will be allocated one of 15 slots on the rota which follows a shift pattern that includes weekday day and night shifts, weekend day and night shifts, some shorter weekday shifts and also non-clinical shifts. This rota is made up on resident doctors and advanced nurse practitioners and is fully compliant with both the resident doctor contract and EWTD.

• Attending and contributing to the PICU morning handover and ward round meeting
• Making decisions regarding the management of children on PICU
• Reviewing critically ill children in other areas of the children's hospital, making management decisions and admitting them to PICU if needed
• Liaising with other specialists regarding the care of PICU patients
• Performing high level clinical skills including but not limited to anaesthesia, intubation, central venous and arterial access, lumbar puncture and peritoneal catheter insertion.
• Writing detailed PICU discharge and death summaries
• Preparing and delivering teaching to medical and nursing staff on PICU
• Communicating with families on PICU, including in challenging and upsetting circumstances under appropriate supervision
• Audit, research and quality improvement project work
• Applicants with a good amount of previous PICU experience e.g. post-CCT may be offered opportunities to act up informally in the consultant role during which time appropriate supervision and support will always be available.

Why you should join our Team
The Paediatric Intensive Care Unit in Leeds Children’s Hospital is looking for a highly motivated individual to join our team as a clinical fellow. We are primarily looking for those with significant previous PICM experience e.g. post- CCT PICM subspecialty trained doctors but will consider less qualified applicants as well.

The individual will also be expected to contribute to one of the 15 rota slots which follows a shift pattern that includes weekday, evening and weekend shifts.

We have a large 18 bedded Paediatric Intensive Care Unit, providing exposure to critically ill children with a variety of general paediatric pathologies as well as congenital cardiac, neurosurgical, trauma, general surgical, haematological, oncological, renal and liver disease, and long-term ventilation patients. The postholder will work alongside a highly committed multi-professional team in a leading children’s hospital, providing family centred care with opportunities to develop clinical, leadership and research skills.

This role is for an initial period of 12 months based at Leeds General Infirmary in West Yorkshire.

Leeds Children’s Hospital PICU has excellent experience in providing PICM training and feedback from previous subspecialty residents has been extremely positive with them all going on to have successful consultant careers.

Enthusiasm, flexibility and the ability to work in a team is also essential for the individual to succeed in this role.

Evidence of achievement of ST3+ competencies in: Paediatrics (as defined by RCPCH) or Anaesthetics (as defined by RCOA) or Intensive Care Medicine (as defined by FICM)
