Job Summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 Wheelchair Therapist (Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist) to join the Leeds Teaching Hospitals Wheelchair Team within the Specialist Rehabilitation Service on a fixed-term contract for 12 months. This is a 0.53 WTE (20 hours per week - preferred working days Monday, Tuesday and Friday) position based at Leeds Wheelchair Service, Seacroft Hospital.

The Specialist Rehabilitation Service encompasses the Prosthetic, Orthotic and Wheelchair Services, providing specialist assessment and intervention to individuals with a wide range of complex needs. Previous experience within a Wheelchair Service is not essential, as comprehensive support, supervision, and training will be provided by the established multidisciplinary team. However, the successful candidate will have a strong clinical background in the management of long-term conditions, postural management, and pressure care, to deliver patient-centred assessments and using advanced clinical reasoning skills to plan interventions. The candidate should demonstrate leadership and mentoring skills to support the whole team.

This role offers an excellent opportunity for an Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist looking to develop specialist skills in wheelchair provision, postural assessments and equipment provision to meet clinical needs. The candidate will be supported by an experienced service to develop the knowledge and skills in this area.

Why you should join our Team
Joining Leeds Wheelchair Service offers an exciting opportunity to make a meaningful difference to the lives of adults and children with complex mobility and postural needs. As part of a well-established and supportive multidisciplinary team, you will help deliver specialist wheelchair and seating interventions that promote independence, participation, and wellbeing throughout a person's lifetime.

We are looking for an innovative and motivated Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist who is committed to excellence and able to work autonomously while managing a varied caseload. This role provides the opportunity to further develop your expertise in wheelchair provision, postural management, and pressure care, supported by experienced colleagues and a collaborative team environment.

You will also have the opportunity to demonstrate and develop your leadership skills through supporting the growth of the service, providing training and supervision to colleagues, and contributing to service improvement initiatives that shape the future of wheelchair services across Leeds.

We are committed to supporting professional development through clinical supervision, learning opportunities, and ongoing professional education. Whether you are experienced in wheelchair services or looking to build on existing transferable skills, you will be joining a forward-thinking team that values innovation, collaboration, and high-quality patient care.

What you will bring to the role
  • Ability to undertake comprehensive assessments of adults and children with complex mobility, postural and pressure care needs, using advanced clinical reasoning to develop appropriate solutions.
  • Knowledge and experience in assessing and managing posture, positioning, seating needs and pressure care for individuals with long-term and progressive conditions.
  • Commitment to delivering high-quality, individualised care that promotes independence, comfort, participation and quality of life.
  • Ability to communicate complex clinical information effectively to patients, families, carers and professionals using a range of verbal and non-verbal communication methods.
  • Confidence in managing a diverse caseload, prioritising clinical demands and making informed decisions while remaining professionally accountable.
  • Experience of working effectively with therapists, engineers, medical and nursing staff, education professionals and external agencies to deliver coordinated care.
  • Ability to support, supervise and develop junior staff, assistants and students, while contributing to the ongoing development of the wider team.
  • Enthusiasm for contributing to audit, research, quality improvement initiatives and the implementation of new systems and ways of working to enhance service delivery.
  • Dedication to evidence-based practice, clinical governance, risk management and continuous professional development to maintain and enhance specialist knowledge and skills.
  • Ability to adapt to changing service demands, manage challenging situations sensitively and work creatively to identify effective and cost-efficient solutions for service users with complex needs.
