Job Summary
J47 is a busy 25-bed Emergency General Surgery Ward offering an excellent opportunity for motivated and compassionate Staff Nurses to develop their skills and knowledge in surgical nursing. We are looking for individuals who are committed to delivering high-quality, individualised, patient-centred care and who demonstrate professionalism, flexibility, resilience, and a positive team approach. The ward predominantly cares for patients admitted acutely unwell under Emergency General Surgery as well as a wide range of specialties, including colorectal, upper gastrointestinal, urology, gastroenterology, hepatology, and renal medicine, while also supporting general medicine and elderly care when required. J47 is committed to staff development, providing comprehensive support to achieve clinical competencies, Practice Assessor and Practice Supervisor qualifications, and access to ongoing education and training within a supportive learning environment.

Main duties of the job
The role is to provide and be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of individualised programmes of care. You will deliver care without supervision and take responsibility as the prime care provider for a group of patients and at all times promote confidence in our commitment to provide excellent compassionate patient care. The role will involve taking charge of the ward or department as necessary in the absence of the Sister or Charge Nurse. You will participate in the in-service training, preceptorship and mentorship of junior staff, post basic learners and students as well as maintaining your personal development. The jobholder will work within an environment caring for adult patients, within an acute adult inpatient environment, providing high-quality nursing care for patients admitted with acute illness, predominantly those presenting with acute surgical conditions. The role also involves caring for patients with a range of acute medical and surgical conditions across specialties within the AMS Clinical Service Unit (CSU).

Emergency General Surgery (EGS) sits within the Abdominal Medicine and Surgery (AMS) Clinical Service Unit and is a dynamic, rapidly developing speciality that has grown significantly over the past five years. As a relatively new service, EGS continues to evolve, creating excellent opportunities for learning, innovation, service development, and career progression. The ward team works closely with EGS consultants, Advanced Clinical Practitioners (ACPs), matrons, and the wider multidisciplinary team to ensure patients receive safe, compassionate, and consistently high-quality care. J47 has strong links with the wider EGS service, including the Surgical Assessment Unit (SAU) and the Ambulatory Surgical Centre (ASC), providing staff with valuable opportunities to broaden their clinical experience within the speciality. The ward is recognised as a welcoming and supportive place to work, with a positive team culture, collaborative approach, and strong focus on patient-centred care. The team has been recognised for its commitment to innovation and service improvement, including the successful implementation of a discharge POD to enhance patient flow and the introduction of digital communication tools to improve team coordination and the delivery of care in a busy acute environment.

What you will bring to the role
  • Communicate with patients and carers to ensure they have access to appropriate information.
  • Maintain and deliver compassionate patient focused care in accordance with LTHT guidelines, policies, values and behaviours.
  • Promote and maintain positive relationships between all staff involved in the care of patients.
  • Undertake duties on other wards or departments as and when required by service demands or patient need.
  • Participate in preceptorship and mentorship programmes
  • Participate in teaching, supervising and assessing of student nurses and other supervised staff, where allocated.
  • In the absence of the Sister or Charge Nurse take charge of the ward or department and co-ordinate ward or department activities.
  • Contribute to the promotion of a positive clinical learning environment.
  • Keep up to date with developments, advances and research in individualised patient care.
  • When in charge of the ward takes responsibility for reporting, investigating and responding to accidents, complaints, untoward incidents and other significant events.
