Job summaryThe Clinical Lead for Emergency Medicine (EM) will provide strategic and clinical leadership to ensure the delivery of high-quality, safe, and effective care for patients within the Emergency pathways. This role is pivotal in driving service improvement, supporting clinical teams, and fostering a culture of excellence and innovation.
Main duties of the jobClinical Leadership & Governance- Lead the EM service, ensuring clinical standards are met and continuously improved.
- Provide expert guidance and oversight on EM, patient flow, and escalation processes.
- Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to ensure effective patient care.
- Promote evidence-based practice and contribute to clinical audit and quality improvement initiatives.
Service Development- Identify opportunities for service redesign and innovation within EM.
- Support the implementation of national and local policies relevant to EM care.
- Lead on transformation projects aimed at improving patient outcomes and operational efficiency.
Workforce & Education- Support the development of junior medical staff, advanced clinical practitioners, and nursing colleagues within emergency medicine.
- Champion leadership development opportunities, including apprenticeship and master's programmes, to build future clinical leaders.
Mentorship & Professional Development- Actively promote mentorship opportunities with the Deputy Medical Director (DMD) and Deputy Chief Medical Officer (DCMO) to support leadership growth and clinical excellence.
- Encourage reflective practice and career development planning among team members.
Collaboration & Communication- Work closely with operational managers, specialty leads, and executive teams to ensure alignment of clinical and strategic priorities.
- Represent emergency medicine in relevant trust-wide committees and external forums.

Job responsibilitiesPrime Responsibilities

Person SpecificationQualificationsEssential- Fellow of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine
- Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent)
- Full and Specialist registration (with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC)
- UK-trained applicants must hold a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview
Desirable- Instructor status in ATLS or ALS or APLS course(s)
ExperienceEssential- Ability to lead, inspire, motivate and develop staff whilst maintaining effective working relationships
Teaching ExperienceEssential- Experience and interest in undergraduate teaching
- Skill and ability in formal and informal teaching for both under/ postgraduate students and nursing/midwifery staff
- Educational supervision accreditation
Desirable- An understanding of current issues in medical education and training
- Previous experience in trainee supervision
- Presentations at National or International meetings
- Publications in peer reviewed journals
Clinical AuditEssential- Active audit interest demonstrated by at least one completed clinical audit in the last 12 months.
- Understanding of NHS systems and audit processes

- Evidence of embedding governance processes to monitor outcomes, safety, and service performance. service improvement projects and audits
