Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust is excited to invite applications for a Consultant Community Paediatrician to join our dynamic team at the Kaleidoscope Children's Centre in Lewisham. We are looking for a compassionate, inclusive clinician who shares our values and is committed to delivering outstanding care.

This newly created post offers a unique opportunity to support our newly redesigned initial assessment neurodevelopmental pathway aiming to reduce the waiting time for autism assessment.You will play a pivotal role in shaping early intervention and improving outcomes for young children and their families.

You'll be joining at a transformational time, as we redesign our clinical pathways to reduce waiting times and enhance patient experience. Your expertise will directly contribute to service innovation and improved access to care.

Main duties of the job
This is a new post and would suit a consultant who is wishing to develop their role within a department that has a broad range of community paediatric experience. The post holder will work in all aspects of Community Paediatrics, suite to their experience, competencies and the priorities of service provision.

There is no overnight commitment. The postholders will contribute to the daytime child protection rota, but there is no expectation to contribute to Childhood Sexual Abuse (CSA) medicals.

The postholder will join a team of 9 Consultant Community Paediatricians, 2 community SAS doctors and one Speciality Doctor. Senior therapists and clinical nurse specialist also contribute to assessments and care for young

Job description
Job responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities:
  • The post holder will work in all aspects of Community Paediatrics, suited to their experience and competencies and the priorities of service provision.
  • The post holder will undertake assessment and management of children with neurodevelopmental concerns and safeguarding.
  • Undertake neurodevelopmental assessments including for Autism and Social Communication Disorders.
  • Participate in the consultant-led Child Protection rota.
  • Undertake health assessments for Looked After Children and provide written reports as appropriate.
  • Support and advice colleagues in the clinical assessment and care of children and young people, whilst being clear about others personal clinical professional accountability.
  • Provision of supervision to trainees and specialist doctors and extended members of the clinical team including clinical nurse specialists and AHPs.

General responsibilities
  • To participate in clinical supervision and continuing professional development of both career and training grade medical staff
  • To work with Community Paediatric services and Childrens Community Services Directorate to meet service commitments and needs of children and families.
  • To develop care pathways across the acute and community services
  • To participate in the development of Specialist Child Health Services in collaboration with other members of the management team
  • To support the collection of relevant information on the work of the medical team, detailing the work of the service for stakeholders.

Medical Education & Teaching:
  • To take part in clinical and educational supervision of post graduate trainees.
  • To participate in the medical student training programme.
  • To plan and deliver training for GP trainees and other post-graduate teaching.
  • Contribute to the delivery of training for health staff and inter-agency training.
  • To liaise with other agencies on clinical and operational matters relevant to the work of the service.
  • Provide advice and signposting to other professionals about legal processes, key research and policy documents.
  • Liaise with professional leads from other agencies, such as Education and Childrens Social care.

Clinical Audit and Clinical Governance:
  • Participate in clinical audit, incident reporting and analysis and to ensure resulting actions are implemented.
  • Work closely with the Directorate, Patient and Public Involvement panels in relation to clinical and services developments as delegated.
  • Participate in ensuring NICE requirements are reviewed and implemented and monitored in the speciality areas.

Continuing Professional Development:
  • Attend relevant local, regional, and national continuing professional development activities to maintain competence.
  • Meet the organisations requirements for training attendance.
  • Receive regular clinical supervision and undertake reflective supervision

Clinical Audit and Clinical Governance:

  • Review clinical outcomes in designated area using external benchmarking data where appropriate, to identify and advise variances to the Clinical Director.
  • To keep fully informed about best practice in the speciality areas and ensure implications for practice changes are discussed with the Clinical Director.
  • To role model good practice for infection control to all members of the multidisciplinary team.

Continuing Professional Development:
  • Attend relevant local, regional, and national continuing professional development activities to maintain competence.
  • Meet the organisations requirements for training attendance.
  • Receive regular supervision and undertake reflective practice.

Policy, Planning and Management:
  • Support the Trust to deliver quality patient care Contribute to the development of clinical and organisational protocols and guidelines
  • Assist in the development of the Annual Service Plan for the Directorate and Division and participate in the strategic planning of the service Comply with all Trust policies

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
  • Medical degree, MBBS or equivalent
  • Member or Fellow of the Royal College of Paediatrics and child health or equivalent
  • Full and Specialist registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) or be eligible for registration within six months of interview.
  • Applicants that are UK trained, must also be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
  • Applicants that are non-UK trained, they will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT and be on the GMC Specialist Register/Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR)

Desirable
  • Grid training in community paediatrics
  • MSc /Diploma in community child health or relevant subject

Clinical Experience
Essential
  • Comprehensive Training and experience in community paediatrics
  • Evidence of training and experience gained obtaining CCT in Community Child Health (CCH) or if CCT in General Paediatrics, must be able to demonstrate equivalent competencies required for CCT in CCH have been achieved
  • At least 2 years' experience in Community Child Health including Neuro-developmental paediatrics, Safeguarding, Looked after children
  • Training and experience in the identification and management of suspected child abuse
  • Clinical experience in the field of safeguarding and substantial experience of the legislation relating to children and young people and the court process
  • Experience of working with vulnerable children and young people and families and children in challenging situations.
  • Valid BLS and NLS training
  • Valid level 3 safeguarding training

Desirable
  • Training and experience in assessment of ADHD Experience
  • Experience of lead role in an area of child health
  • Broad experience of working within the NHS

Clinical Audit
Essential
  • Active audit interest demonstrated by at least one completed clinical audit in the last year.
  • Understanding of NHS systems and audit processes
  • Evidence of service improvement projects and audits

Desirable
  • Publication of audit results.
  • Experience in service development and quality improvement projects relating to Community Child Health
  • Evidence of involvement and /or experience in risk processes such as Serious Incident reviews and patient safety systems

Teaching Experience
Essential
  • Experience and interest in undergraduate teaching
  • Skill and ability in formal and informal teaching for both under/ postgraduate students and nursing/midwifery staff
  • Educational supervision accreditation

Desirable
  • An understanding of current issues in medical education and training
  • Previous experience in trainee Supervision
  • Knowledge of current changes in paediatric training
  • Higher teaching qualification
  • Presentations at National or International meetings
  • Publications in peer reviewed journals

Management and Administrative Experience
Essential
  • Understands the management structure of the NHS Evidence of risk management

IT Skills
Essential
  • Ability to use Microsoft office packages, e.g. MS Word, Excel, Access & PowerPoint.
  • Ability to use patient information systems
