Job summary
We are looking for a dynamic SLT/rehabilitationist to join the Manchester Auditory Implant Programme at Manchester Royal Infirmary. The Implant Programme is unique in providing hearing implant services for adults and children under one management structure within one hospital Trust.

This is an exciting opportunity to work within a highly skilled multi disciplinary team supporting individuals to maximise their communication outcomes, independence and quality of life through tailored rehabilitation. You'll deliver evidence based, person-centred therapy programmes, adapting approaches to meet individual needs.

You will have experience in working with young children and adults with hearing loss and /or complex communication needs, providing assessment and habilitation.

Cochlear implant experience is not essential but preferred and full training will be provided. There will be the opportunity to participate in on-going research projects.

You should have a recognised qualification in Speech and Language Therapy or equivalent. Additional qualifications in audiology, psychology or sign language are desirable.

The post involves centre, home and school-based services, so a full driving licence is essential.

There will be ample opportunities for professional development through performance management and attendance at national and international conferences.

Main duties of the job
  • The post holder will provide a comprehensive specialist speech and language /aural habilitation therapy service, working autonomously with support from senior colleagues and within a multidisciplinary team providing support to profoundly deaf babies, children and adults.
  • The postholder will be expected to travel to see patients in their local environments and to provide specialist clinical expertise and support to local medical and educational professional staff and families.
  • The post holder will manage their own caseload and will participate in the service delivery of speech and language intervention to the patients within the Cochlear Implant Programme, adapting the therapy input and intervention as necessary based on service need, research and best practice under the direction of their line manager.The caseload will be babies, young children and adult patients.

Person Specification
Qualifications and Education
  • Essential: BSc in SLT or equivalent; Recognised BSc/MSc degree in Speech Pathology
  • Desirable: Post graduate study in the field of hearing loss; CACDP British Sign Language stage 1

Registration
  • Essential: Registration with HCPC
  • Desirable: Qualification in Auditory Verbal Therapy

Knowledge and Experience
  • Essential: Theoretical knowledge of working with children with significantly delayed language development; Experience delivering assessment and intervention for pre or perilingual babies and/ or young children; Experience of objective measures of speech perception and production; Knowledge of education provision for children with hearing loss; Experience of working with parents and carers; Experience of working in a multi disciplinary team; Experience working with Adults with communication difficulties; Experience delivering assessment and intervention with Adults e.g complex communication needs
  • Desirable: Experience of working with children and adults with hearing loss; Member of CEN Groups in Deafness; Experience participating in research and/or evaluation of services; Knowledge of technical audiological equipment such as cochlear implants, hearing aids and radio aid systems; Knowledge of National policies of care in Cochlear Implants (paediatrics and Adults)

Skills and Abilities
  • Essential: Excellent oral and written communication skills; Clinical skills in the assessment of speech & language development in babies, preschool and school aged children, with knowledge regarding the impact hearing impairment has on speech and language development; Ability to work in a team; Clinical skills in the assessment and management of speech & language and communication of Adults
  • Desirable: Ability to undertake audit of clinical outcomes and research; Ability to work under pressure from a busy and varied caseload; Skills in utilising auditory, visual and tactile information to facilitate auditory discrimination; Clinical skills in assessing and management adults who have diagnosis of Stroke, Learning disability or Dementia
