Job summary

Main duties of the job
The post holder will work as an integral member of the multidisciplinary team (MDT) within the Emergency Department, delivering behavioural safety support seven days per week, including unsocial hours and public holidays. The role focuses on providing therapeutic engagement, behavioural support, and de-escalation interventions for patients presenting with behavioural distress, agitation, or acute mental health symptoms in the Emergency Department.

About us
Do you have the ambition and vision to deliver our mission of the Best of Care by the Best of People providing excellent care, every time? Here at Medway, we pride ourselves on working together as one to ensure that our shared vision is achieved for our patients. Our BEST values underpin Patient First: B - Bold, E - Every person counts, S - Sharing and open, T - Together.

Job responsibilities
A key function of the role is to support ED colleagues in managing behavioural risk safely and effectively, contributing actively to dynamic risk assessment discussions alongside Emergency Department clinicians. Where a patient requires formal psychiatric assessment, the post holder will escalate appropriately to the Core 24 Liaison Psychiatry team. The role also carries an important responsibility in promoting parity of esteem between physical and mental health within the Emergency Department environment, ensuring compassionate, person-centred care for all patients. This position does not include undertaking specialist mental health assessments or diagnostic formulation. All psychiatric assessments and decisions regarding admission remain the responsibility of Core 24 Liaison Psychiatry and the Emergency Department Consultant in Charge.
