Our Community Paediatric team is made up of a wide range of enthusiastic and passionate individuals which currently includes 5 consultants, 5 Specialty and Specialist (SAS) doctors and a diverse team of nursing staff. The clinical team is supported by a dedicated secretariat team, with office and networked computer facilities.

We are a busy centre, serving a large diverse population. Our community paediatric services are delivered across two hospital sites (Pinderfields General Hospital in Wakefield and Pontefract General Infirmary in Pontefract), which make up The Mid-Yorkshire Hospitals Trust. The service also delivers clinics within special schools and medical centres in the geographical area. Our vision is to deliver patient-centred, accessible and integrated services as seamlessly as possible with primary care. The dedicated team at Mid-Yorks sees around 4,500 patients through our outpatient departments. Our Trust has modern, spacious state of the art clinical, diagnostic and teaching facilities.

Main duties of the job
Main duties of the post include:

• General Community Paediatric Clinics, Neurodisability, Bladder and Bowel Management Clinics.
• Initial Health Assessments (IHA) for Looked After Children, with scope to contribute to adoption work, Pre-Adoption Medicals (PAM) as the service develops.
• ADHD assessment (with potential involvement in triage pathways).
• Close multidisciplinary working with education, therapy services, CAMHS, local authority teams, and palliative care providers.
• Opportunities to contribute to clinical and educational supervision (following appropriate training).
• Administrative duties, with appropriate office accommodation and secretarial support provided.
• Promoting a strong multidisciplinary team approach across community paediatrics and partner agencies.

An Introduction to the Division/Specialty from the Head of Clinical Service

The trust is made up of 3 sites delivering excellent clinical care from our hospitals at Pontefract, Wakefield and Dewsbury. We have a 26 bedded children’s ward with a 4 bedded children’s level 2 HDU at the Pinderfields site as well as a children’s assessment unit and 24-hour paediatric ED. We have a level 2 neonatal unit also at the Pinderfields site with 4 ICU cots. Dewsbury also as a 12-hour children’s assessment unit that runs from 10am until 10pm attached to the 24-hour emergency department. Children’s outpatient services are delivered at all three Trust sites and in some community settings

Essential person specification requirements

• Practices within the professional values and behaviours expected of all doctors as set out in GMC Good Medical Practice and the Generic Professional Capabilities Framework including current licence to practice from the GMC
• Demonstrates the underpinning subject-specific competences i.e. knowledge, skills and behaviours relevant to the role setting and scope
• Clinically evaluates and manages a patient, formulating a prioritised differential diagnosis, initiating an appropriate management plan, and reviewing and adjusting this depending on the outcomes of treatment
• Manages the difficulties of dealing with patients with complexity and uncertainty in the care of patients, employing expertise and clinical decision-making skills of a senior and independent/ autonomous practitioner.
• Critically reflects on own competence, understands own limits, and seeks help when required
• Communicates effectively and can share decision-making with patients, relatives and carers; treats patients as individuals, promoting a person-centred approach to their care, including self-management.
• Respects patients’ dignity, ensures confidentiality and appropriate communication where potentially difficult or where barriers exist e.g. using interpreter and adjusting for patients with communication difficulties
• Demonstrates key generic clinical skills around the areas of concern, ensuring humane interventions, prescribing medicine safely and using medical devices safely.

• Medical Degree from recognised medical school

• Full GMC Registration with a Licence to Practise.
• Shall have completed a minimum of 12 years’ medical work (either continuous period or in aggregate) since obtaining a primary medical qualification of which a minimum of six years should have been in a relevant specialty in the Specialty Doctor and/or closed SAS grades.
