Contract: Permanent
Hours: Full-time, 10 PAs
Salary: £113,565 to £150,569 per annum pro rata
Interview Date: 17 December 2026
We are looking for a fellowship-trained arthroplasty surgeon to grow our hip and knee replacement service as part of our forward-thinking and expanding Trauma and Orthopaedic department at Milton Keynes University Hospital. This post is one of four new Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic posts, alongside Orthopaedic Spine, Shoulder & Elbow (with an interest in Upper Limb Trauma) and Children's Orthopaedics.
You will deliver a high-volume, low-complexity (HVLC) elective practice, making the most of our two newly built laminar flow orthopaedic operating theatres. You will also lead the management of periprosthetic fractures and of metastatic bone disease, working with oncology and the Oxford sarcoma service.
The post includes general trauma on call, adult and paediatric, currently 1 in 12. The job plan on appointment is 10 PAs, split 8 DCC : 2 SPA.
MKUH is a University Teaching Hospital in partnership with the University of Buckingham, with undergraduate teaching delivered through the Buckingham and Oxford medical schools.
MKUH works in a network with Oxford University Hospitals for complex work, including major trauma, sarcoma and, through the Oxford Bone Infection Unit, complex infection work.
Main duties of the job
Informal visits and discussions are welcome and encouraged after shortlisting. Interview dates to be confirmed. We expect the post to start from the candidate's first availability, with flexibility for notice periods and for those completing training.
We support flexible working and welcome applications from people who wish to work less than full time or job-share. Applications are welcome from doctors within six months of their CCT date at the time of interview.
About us
Milton Keynes University Hospital, in proud partnership with the University of Buckingham, is a University Teaching Hospital committed to advancing patient care through cutting-edge research and education. With a "Good" rating from the CQC and significant investment underway, this is an exciting time to join our team and grow your career.
As a medium-sized general hospital, we provide a full range of general medical and surgical services, including a busy Emergency Department, Maternity, and Paediatrics. As the population of our city and surrounding areas continues to grow rapidly, we are expanding and enhancing our facilities to meet rising demand and improve access to care for all our communities.
We are also proud to offer a growing portfolio of specialist services. In January 2025 we opened our state-of-the-art Radiotherapy Centre, bringing advanced cancer treatment closer to home. Our services also include neonatology, specialist surgical care, and a wide range of diagnostics, supported by the new Community Diagnostic Centre at Whitehouse Health Centre. We have just opened the Oak Wards - a new ward block featuring two 24-bed wards.
Further investment is underway, including the recently approved Women and Children's Centre, set to open by 2030.
