Main duties of the jobThe purpose of this job will be to support the day-to-day activities of the department in co-operation with the rest of the surgical staffing and the successful candidate will participate in all aspects of the unit's clinical work including clinics, operating sessions, and ward rounds.
The successful candidate will also be required to contribute to the emergency general surgical workload of the team.
The post would be ideally suited to a Senior House Officer looking to gain specialist General Surgery experience, and you would be expected to participate in all the other on-going activities of the department including audit, research projects and to attend various departmental meetings and teaching sessions (MDTs, Audit meetings, M&M, ward, and formal teaching).
Within the hours contracted, the successful candidate is expected to be flexible in the exact hours worked each day.
All Medical and Dental Staff employed by the Trust are expected to comply with hospital health and safety policies, clinical governance, and other risk management policies.

Job responsibilitiesEach doctor is expected to assist in the care of all patients in the Unit when required to do so. Duties include ward rounds, operating theatre sessions & administrative (dictation of summaries, letters, coding etc.) and presentations (M + M, MDT meetings etc.)
The successful applicant will be expected to participate in most of the day-to-day activities of the department in co-operation with the rest of the surgical staffing. They will take part in the emergency surgical on call service at SHO level.
The successful candidate is expected to participate in all the other on-going activities of the department including audit, research projects and to attend various departmental meetings and teaching sessions.
The doctor accepts that they will also perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate consultant in consultation where practicable with their colleagues both senior and junior.
It has been agreed between the professions and the Department that while juniors accept that they will perform such duties, the Secretary of State stresses that additional commitments arising under the sub-section are exceptional and in particular that juniors should not be required to undertake work of this kind for prolonged periods or on a regular basis.
When undergraduate students are attached to the department, they will be involved in their training. They will also be involved in the supervision and training of junior doctors within the hospital.
It is also expected that the doctor will ensure that the discharge letters are completed in a timely fashion and accurate.

Person SpecificationQualificationsEssentialDesirableExperience/ TrainingEssential- Completion of Foundation competencies or equivalent.

Desirable- General Surgery experience
Language skillsEssential- applicants have undertaken undergraduate medical training in English
- applicants have scores in the academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or equivalent equal to at least 7.5 in each area
Clinical skillsEssential- capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge relevant to the job
- Demonstrates appropriate technical competence & evidence of development of excellent diagnostic skills & judgement and prioritise clinical need
Desirable- Attendance at relevant courses, e.g. ALS, ALERTS or equivalent
Clinical JudgementEssential- experience in making clinical decisions and managing risk. Knows when to seek help, able to prioritise clinical need.
