Job summary
This post is offered at ST3+ level and will start as soon as pre-employment checks completed until August 3rd 2027. The successful candidates will be working with the Consultant Foot and Ankle Orthopaedic Surgeons and will include elective and trauma, operating and clinic work.

The applicant will be part of a 1:9 on call rota.

Main duties of the job
The appointee will function at registrar level and participate in middle grade on call rota for the department.

The appointee will be required to assist in the supervision, teaching, training, and monitoring of more junior doctors and the teaching and training of medical students.

The appointee will have delegated responsibility for all the patients under the care of their consultant / team. He/she will refer to the Consultant when problems arise which are beyond his/her authority and/or experience.

The appointee must maintain liaison with colleagues who are on duty immediately before and after

It is the responsibility of the appointee to ensure that the Trauma service is managed promptly and effectively.

Job responsibilities
  • Standard clinical duties including on call cover, ward rounds, theatre and clinic activities
  • To participate in audits, mortality and morbidity reviews, quality improvement and/or current research projects. These are available through individual consultants.
  • To support the FY doctor on call as much as possible- advice, clinical reviews, assistance with practical tasks like manipulations and patient handover. The expectation is to be on site until handover for daytime on call and be available for advice remotely
  • To attend and participate in governance meetings and present mortality and morbidity reviews for their respective teams.
  • To attend the active teaching programme with weekly lectures, trauma, and radiology meetings.
  • To contribute to the active journal club
  • To participate in the teaching of Foundation Doctors at the bedside as well as to Medical Students
  • During the term of the appointment the post holder might be required to attend other hospitals within the Trust if so, requested by the management.
  • To maintain a good working relationship with existing staff members in the hospital

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
  • MRCS
  • Primary Medical Degree
  • Minimum of 12 months NHS experience

Knowledge
Essential
  • ATLS certificate or equivalent.
  • Basic Fracture Management course (AO or equivalent)

Experience
Essential
  • Competence on pre- and post-operative management of common orthopaedic emergency and elective conditions
