Job summaryThe Band 6 Senior Sister/Charge Nurse within the Surgical Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) service is responsible for providing effective clinical leadership and operational management to ensure the delivery of high-quality, safe, and efficient patient care. The post holder will coordinate the daily running of the Surgical SDEC unit, supporting the multidisciplinary team to assess, treat, and discharge patients with acute surgical conditions on the same day where clinically appropriate.
The role involves advanced clinical assessment, patient flow management, staff supervision, and service development, ensuring that care is delivered in accordance with Trust policies, national standards, and best practice guidelines.
Main duties of the jobClinical Leadership- Provide visible clinical leadership and act as a role model for nursing and support staff.
- Coordinate the day-to-day operational management of the Surgical SDEC service.
- Support the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care.
- Ensure the delivery of safe, effective, and evidence-based nursing care.
- Manage clinical emergencies and escalate concerns appropriately.
Patient Assessment and Care Management- Undertake comprehensive nursing assessments for patients presenting with acute surgical conditions.
- Prioritise patients according to clinical acuity and service demands.
- Support timely investigations, treatment, and discharge planning.
- Ensure patients receive clear information and appropriate safety-netting advice upon discharge.
Patient Flow and Operational Management- Lead and coordinate patient flow through the Surgical SDEC pathway.
- Ensure timely assessment and treatment to support same-day discharge where appropriate.
- Escalate capacity and flow issues promptly to maintain patient safety and service efficiency.
Staff Management and Development- Supervise, support, and mentor junior nurses, HCAs, and students.
- Participate in staff appraisal, supervision, and personal development planning.
- Identify training needs and support workforce development.
- Manage staffing levels and skill mix to ensure safe patient care.
- Promote staff wellbeing and maintain a positive team culture.

Job descriptionSurgical SDEC is a brand new unit developed to support surgical patients coming through the hospital, to prevent delays and long waits.
The post holder will coordinate the daily running of the unit, ensuring the delivery of safe, effective, and patient-centred care to patients presenting with acute surgical conditions requiring urgent assessment, treatment, and discharge on the same day where appropriate.
The post holder will act as a clinical expert and role model, supporting the development of staff, promoting multidisciplinary working, and contributing to the achievement of service objectives, including avoidance of unnecessary admissions, improved patient flow, and optimisation of patient outcomes.
