Job summaryThis post offers the opportunity to join our existing team of Consultants in Respiratory Medicine at North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust.
We are looking for an individual who wants to be able to influence and develop an evolving department. We are committed to providing the best level of care and continually push to advance Respiratory Medicine within the region. The right candidate will be a team player with a flexible approach to support and complement the existing Respiratory Service, who will a take an active role in improving patient care. The appointment is for a total of 10 PAs per week, including 1.5 PAs for on-call work. It is anticipated that the Job Plan will include a commitment to support General Medicine on-call.
The successful candidate will be expected to be an active member of the Lung Cancer team and will take on the role of Responsible Clinician for the National Lung Cancer Screening programme, which has recently commenced within Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.
Main duties of the job- Undertake general/speciality Respiratory Medicine out-patient clinics.
- Provide inpatient ward care.
- Support the Lung Cancer Service for Peterborough, working alongside colleagues, the Clinical Lead and Directorate Management Team.
- Support the National Lung Cancer Screening Programme in the role of Responsible Clinician, who manages the pathways for patients found to have abnormalities on their scans - this role is supported by a specialist nurse and administrative support.
- Provide on call within the Department of Medicine: approximately 1 in 18 frequency twilight shifts (Peterborough site); there are 3 weekends per year and 3 weeks per year when the candidate will help cover acute medicine patients.
- Contribute to the training of resident doctors and the nursing team.
- Demonstrate a commitment to continuing professional development and appraisal.
- Work with the Regional service to support Lung Cancer pathways.

Job responsibilitiesPrinciple Elements of the postMaintenance and development of Respiratory Medicine services within the Trust to the highest standard.
This role is predominantly centred at Peterborough City Hospital, although going forwards it is anticipated that there will be increasing dialogue between the two main NWAFT hospital sites (Peterborough and Hinchingbrooke).
To share with colleagues the responsibility of delivering high quality care in Respiratory Medicine in out-patient and in-patient settings.
Teaching and training of junior staff, medical students, Nurses and other professionals allied to medicine.
To actively participate in both Departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and Audit.
Lead role in sub speciality depending on experience of successful candidate.
To have responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing medical education (CME), including revalidation with the GMC.
Person SpecificationEducation and QualificationsEssential- MB ChB/MBBS or equivalent
- MRCP
- CCT in GIM & Respiratory Medicine (or equivalent or within 6 months of receipt of CCT at time of interview) or on the Specialist Register
- Full registration and license to practice with the GMC
Desirable- Higher qualification (e.g. MD, PhD)
ExperienceEssential- Extensive training and experience in General Internal Medicine as well as Respiratory Medicine
- Ability to communicate with other members/grades of staff, patients, families and General Practitioners.
- Commitment to multidisciplinary work
- Evidence of involvement in service developments/planning
Desirable- Evidence of ability to pursue independent research
- Specific training in communication skills, teaching, mentoring, coaching
- Evidence of successful implementation of new working patterns/methods
KnowledgeEssential- Knowledge of corporate structure of NHS Trusts, the NHS Plan and clinical governance
- Evidence of specific training in management (e.g. courses, practical experience)
