Job summaryAn exciting opportunity has arisen at the Northerncare Alliance for the appointment of a substantive Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon based at Salford Royal Hospital.
This is a new consultant appointment within a well-established and highly regarded colorectal service. The successful candidate will join a team of nine specialist lower gastrointestinal (LGI) surgeons within the General Surgery Directorate, working alongside colleagues across colorectal surgery, emergency general surgery, intestinal failure and other specialist services.
The post offers an excellent opportunity for an ambitious and collaborative surgeon to contribute to the delivery and further development of a high-quality colorectal service, while also playing an active role in emergency general surgery. We welcome applications from candidates with additional specialist interests that complement the existing service, including colorectal cancer, abdominal wall reconstruction, intestinal failure, inflammatory bowel disease, pelvic floor and functional bowel disorders, and trauma.
Main duties of the jobThe successful candidate will contribute to the full range of colorectal surgical services, including the diagnosis and management of colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, benign and functional colorectal disorders and complex and tertiary colorectal conditions.
Applicants will be required to be competent in the surgical management of colorectal cancer and will be core members of the MDT. The unit has a long established focus on laparoscopic resections and is now an established robotic colorectal unit. Experience and expertise in additional areas of colorectal practice are welcomed.
The colorectal service has evolved in response to increasing demand for colorectal cancer care and the development of an expanding tertiary and supraregional service for complex colorectal patients. The service benefits from close integration with the National Intestinal Failure Unit, one of only two National Reference Centres for Intestinal Failure in the UK, providing a unique environment for the management of patients with complex gastrointestinal disease.
The Colorectal Department runs a Consultant of the Week (COW) model on a 1:9 (1:10 with this appointment). This is a day-time service which does not include any on-call element. The duty consultant delivers a ward round of all Colorectal inpatients, a virtual clinic for patients on the TWW pathway and ad hoc specialist support to colleagues.
