Job summary
Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Specialist Grade Doctor in Trauma & Orthopaedics (Hand & Wrist) to join our team on a fixed-term basis from September 2026 for 9 months.

This is an exciting opportunity to work within a forward-thinking, CQC Outstanding Trust, delivering specialist elective and trauma hand and wrist services across our modern hospital network.

Working alongside an experienced team of consultant colleagues and multidisciplinary professionals, you will play a key role in providing high-quality, patient-centred care while contributing to service development, education, audit, and research activities.

The successful candidate will:
  • Deliver specialist elective hand and wrist outpatient and surgical services.
  • Participate in the specialist hand trauma rota.
  • Support the wider trauma service when required.
  • Work collaboratively with consultant colleagues and multidisciplinary teams across the Trust.
  • Contribute to clinical governance, quality improvement, education and service development initiatives.
  • Participate in teaching medical students and junior doctors within a supportive learning environment.

Main duties of the job
Clinical Responsibilities
  • Provide specialist elective Hand & Wrist orthopaedic care through outpatient clinics and operating theatre sessions.
  • Assess, diagnose and manage patients with hand and wrist conditions.
  • Participate in the specialist hand trauma rota, managing acute hand and wrist injuries.
  • Support the wider trauma service and, when required, contribute to the general trauma rota.
  • Work collaboratively with consultant colleagues and the multidisciplinary team to deliver safe, effective and patient-centred care.

Service Development and Leadership
  • Contribute to the provision and development of Trauma & Orthopaedic services across Northumberland and North Tyneside.
  • Work with managers and clinical colleagues to improve efficiency and service performance.
  • Support service improvement initiatives and help achieve agreed service objectives.
  • Undertake administrative duties associated with patient care and service delivery.

Teaching and Training
  • Participate in teaching and training of undergraduate medical students and junior doctors.
  • Provide constructive feedback and support learning within the department.

Clinical Governance, Audit and Quality Improvement
  • Participate in clinical audit, governance activities and quality improvement projects.
  • Support incident reporting, evidence-based practice and implementation of clinical guidelines

  • 8.5 Programmed Activities (PAs) for Direct Clinical Care
  • 1.5 Programmed Activities (PAs) for Supporting Professional Activities

Person Specification
Qualifications - Essential
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • FRCS (Tr and Orth) or equivalent
  • Full registration and a License to Practice with the General Medical Council (GMC)
  • Evidence of fellowship training or an established practice in Hand & Wrist sub-specialty

Experience - Essential
  • Evidence of a minimum of 12 years post qualification clinical experience, with a minimum of 6 years in a relevant specialty in the Specialty Doctor and/or closed SAS grades

Experience - Desirable
  • Experience of quality improvement activity
  • Experience of leadership
  • Experience of supervising SpR's
