Job summary
We are seeking an experienced and compassionate Specialist Grade Doctor in Adult Psychiatry to join our mental health services in Rotherham. This is an excellent opportunity for a senior clinician to provide high-quality assessment, diagnosis and treatment for adults with complex mental health needs, working as a key member of a supportive team. The provision in Rotherham offers a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach.

Psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, occupational therapists, social workers, peer support colleagues and partner agencies work together to provide holistic care that considers mental health, physical health, social circumstances and recovery goals. The interface with primary care also supports early identification and onward referral, ensuring that people are guided towards the most appropriate pathway as their needs change.

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to contribute to service development, quality improvement, recovery-focused practice and closer working across community and acute pathways. The breadth of local provision, combined with a clear commitment to compassionate, person-centred care, supports both high-quality patient outcomes and meaningful professional development.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will provide senior medical input, support evidence-based practice and work closely with patients, carers and partner agencies. You will help shape responsive, person-centred services and contribute to teaching, supervision, audit and service development.

Applicants should be fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise and have substantial experience in psychiatry, including the requirements for the Specialist Grade. Section 12(2) approval and Approved Clinician status would be welcomed. Excellent communication, clinical leadership and multidisciplinary working skills are essential.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
  • Full registration with the GMC
  • At least 12 years experience working since obtaining primary medical qualification and at least 6 years in Psychiatry
  • Meets the requirements set out in the General Capabilities Framework for Specialist Grade Doctors (NHS Employers)
  • Approved under Section 12(2) of MHA 1983 or eligible to be approved

Desirable
  • Approved Clinician' as defined by the Mental Health Act
  • MRC Psych Higher Specialist Training or equivalent experience
  • MD, Management qualification, other professional qualification (e.g. CBT, PSI, CAT)
  • Endorsement in sub-specialty

Experience
Essential
  • Experience of psychiatric practice in a range of settings.
  • Experience of audit and an understanding of the principles of clinical governance.
  • Clinical supervision experience/skills.
  • The aptitude and potential to develop a leadership role within the service with special emphasis on leading on quality and clinical standards and engaging in service improvement.
  • Ability to undertake training/mentoring of medical staff in junior grades and enthusiasm for education.

Desirable
  • Prior experience working as a Senior Doctor in Psychiatry
  • Evidence of development of special interest.
  • Proven commitment to improving the quality of clinical care.
  • Other special interest/expertise relevant to the post.
  • Qualification in Medical Education

Knowledge
Essential
  • Knowledge of research processes.
  • Committed to Continuing Professional Development.

Desirable
  • Sound knowledge of NHS management structures and systems.

Skills
Essential
  • All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues demonstrated by one of the following: ? That applicants have undertaken undergraduate medical training in English
  • Have achieved the following scores in the academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) in a single sitting within 24 months at time of application - Overall 7.5, Speaking 7.5, Reading 7.5, and Writing 7.5
  • If applicants believe they have adequate communication skills but do not fit into one of these examples they must provide supporting evidence.
  • Work with a recovery-orientated approach alongside patients, carers and staff.
