Job summary
There is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic and motivated nurse to join our Paediatric Critical Care senior leadership team for a permanent position.

We are a 14 bedded Paediatric Critical Care Unit comprising of 8 Level 3 beds and 6 Level 2 beds. We care for children under a wide range of specialities and work closely alongside the Children's Medical Emergency Transport (CoMET) service for the East Midlands region. We are supported by the Paediatric Critical Care Education Team and working alongside Nottingham University, providing learning opportunities for postgraduate nurses.

You must be an RSCN or RN Child qualified nurse with substantial experience of working in a Paediatric Critical Care environment as a Band 6 nurse. You must hold a recognised Critical Care qualification and Mentors and Assessors qualification. You will be expected to lead a team, deputise and co-ordinate care on the Unit and support the PCCU Matron.

You must demonstrate excellent organisational skills and will be expected to support a cohort of Band 5 and 6 nurses and the wider admin team that support the PCCU.

Main duties of the job
The post holder is required to work as a member of Paediatric Critical Care nursing team, they will be a member of a team of Band 7 nurses who take managerial, professional and clinical responsibility for the paediatric critical care nursing team. They will have 24 hours responsibility for the management and delivery of care within PCCU. They will deputise when requested for the PCCU Matron including undertaking responsibility for the management of Children's Services when delegated by the Senior Nurse/Head Nurse.

Job role is 37.5 hours per week. Part time hours considered with a minimum of 28.45 hours which equates to 10 shifts per month.

The clinical band 7 role is a clinical and operational role. The clinical role includes working clinically covering the full range of shifts, leading the clinical team and working with the wider PCCU MDT. The operational role is rotated between the band 7 team and involves working a 4-8 week rota covering core hours. This role involves operational and managerial responsibilities and supporting the PCCU Matron.

Job responsibilities
The post holder will act as Senior Sister/Charge Nurse. He/she will be required to:
  • Be an effective leader and role model and regularly take charge of the Unit, ensuring that the standards and quality of care given to patients, together with the environment in which care is delivered, are maintained at a high standard.
  • Provide regular direct clinical care and utilise experience to support the implementation of both clinical and nonclinical governance.
  • Support and lead a cohort of Band 6 and 5 nurses and members of the admin team, carrying out yearly appraisals and ensuring staff training is up to date.
  • The post holder is required to be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

Training and qualifications
Essential
  • Current level one NMC registration RSCN or RN (Child Branch)
  • Degree in health / nursing related Studies
  • Possession of a Mentoring Course
  • Paediatric Critical Care Course
  • APLS
  • Continuing professional development/ reflective profile
  • Completion of all local competency packages.
  • Paediatric Critical Care Course including level 2 and 3 critical care competency

Desirable
  • Formal leadership and management training
  • Research training/experience
  • EPALS
  • Evidence of study at Masters level
  • GIC instructor or equivalent

Experience
Essential
  • Minimum of 5 years post registration experience to include management/leadership experience
  • Clinically credible who is experienced in Paediatric Critical Care Nursing and able to utilise their clinical expertise and specialist knowledge to deliver high quality evidence based education and care of the critically ill baby, child or young person

Desirable
  • Formal leadership and management training
  • Research training/experience
  • EPALS
  • Evidence of study at Masters level
  • GIC instructor or equivalent

Essential
  • Able to present and receive complex information within the multi professional team
  • Ability to generate and present reports and documents.

  • Ability to respond to, prioritise and analyse complex problems/situations and ensure effective interventions are put in place.
