Job summary
We are delighted to advertise a twelve-month clinical Fellowship in Perioperative Medicine and Anaesthesia. This post is an exciting opportunity for a post-CCT anaesthetist or a senior anaesthetic registrar to join our team and develop their role as a perioperative physician. We pride ourselves in training excellence and have received excellent feedback from our previous fellow.

Main duties of the job
  • Training in cardiopulmonary exercise testing and interpretation, progressing from direct supervision to mentored support. We train our Fellows to the level of independent consultant practice and expect to offer POETTS accreditation when nationally available.
  • Experience of pre-operative echocardiography provided by a dedicated team of Intensive Care Consultants.
  • Mentored sessions in high-risk preoperative assessment clinic.
  • Attendance at weekly high risk anaesthetic meeting with MDT including cardiology, respiratory, renal and ICU. (Finalists in HSJ national awards).
  • We perform robotic assisted urological, colorectal, head and neck and gynaecological procedures. Oxford is a world leading centre for radiologically-guided ablation of tumours and sessions are available to learn the anaesthetic technique (high-frequency ventilation).
  • Developing skills in running appropriate solo lists across the Trust (with remote supervision).
  • Experience in visceral transplantation surgery including renal, simultaneous kidney- pancreas (for which we are one of the largest centres in the world), and modified multi-visceral transplantation.
  • Experience in intensive-overnight recovery in our dedicated Overnight Recovery Unit.
  • Full support to meet the requirements of the Royal College of Anaesthetists 'Advanced Level Perioperative Medicine' syllabus.

About us
Oxford University Hospitals (OUH) is a renowned centre of clinical excellence and one of the largest NHS teaching trusts in the UK. The Trust is made up of three hospitals in Oxford - the John Radcliffe Hospital (which includes the Children's Hospital, West Wing, Eye Hospital, Heart Centre and Women's Centre), the Churchill Hospital, and the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre and the Horton hospital in Banbury. The Nuffield Department of Anaesthesia consists of over 140 consultant anaesthetists and up to 60 trainees.

Job responsibilities
c. Non-clinical opportunities for Fellows:
  • We are a proactive department with a keen interest to develop research interests in the department. This includes involvement in a number of national audit projects and NIHR funded portfolio studies.
  • We have close links with the local research department and research nurses.
  • We would be supportive if fellows would be interested in pursuing the associate PI scheme
  • Fellows will be encouraged to conduct research and novel service development projects aligned with the clinical and research interests of the department.

d. Education/Training opportunities:
  • There are a broad range of opportunities to expand their teaching and educational skills, including at OxDAT, the monthly CPD accredited day for registrars, in OxSTAR, our nationally renowned simulation facility and to other specialties and nurses.
  • We hold regular departmental academic meetings that include discussions of audit, morbidity and mortality, and research updates. The fellow would be expected to contribute to these.
  • Time is set aside for personal development, CPD and Audit. There are facilities both physical and electronic to support the post-holder in this.

Training Programme
The clinical sessions will be agreed with the clinical lead and will form the basis of the Fellowship job plan. The following programme sets out the basic requirements of the Fellowship, the details to be negotiated and agreed with the post holder prior to commencement of the post.
  • Post Duration: 12 months
  • Hours: 48 Hours/week:a) 18 hours /week: Fellowship activities including training lists, cardiopulmonary exercise testing and non-clinical activities,b) Up to 30 hours / week: Provision of anaesthesia across the four clinical sites, Out-of-hours work.
  • The post holder will participate in the senior trainee on-call rota across all working sites. The timing of on-calls may be factored into the job plan.
  • Annual and study leave arrangements must be coordinated within the department to ensure there is an acceptable level of clinical cover.

Person Specification
Experience
Essential
  • At least 5 years postgraduate training in anaesthesia and intensive care / equivalent UK stage 2 training in anaesthesia
  • Experience in multidisciplinary team working in complex cases
  • Ability to make decisions at ST6-7 level
  • Interest in research

Desirable
  • Experience in perioperative medicine / CPET
  • Management of complex rotas
  • Publications/presentations

Qualifications/Training
Essential
  • Primary medical degree - FRCA or equivalent.
  • Specialist training in anaesthesia

Desirable
  • Higher Medical Degree - ATLS, ALS, MOET
  • Completion of specialist training / CCT / equivalent (or within 6 months of CCT)

Skills and Knowledge
Essential
  • Evidence of team leadership skills to be able to undertake effectively the role of a Fellow, in a large multi-site teaching hospital
  • Organisational skills to be able to undertake effectively, the role of a Fellow within a large multi-site teaching hospital.
  • Commitment to Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
  • Good personal and interpersonal skills
  • Good spoken and written English. Communication skills should be highly developed
  • Experience of teaching medical, nursing and PAM, undergraduates and postgraduates
  • Experience of routine clinical audit

Desirable
  • Computing skills: ability to use a word processor, spreadsheet programme and web browser
  • Management training and experience
  • Flexible approach to problem solving
  • Experience in perioperative medicine based teaching
  • Willingness to conduct and/or supervise audit

Other
Essential
  • Full registration with the GMC and licence to practice at the time of application

Desirable
  • Full driving licence
