Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and highly motivated nurse to join the Epilepsy Service at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust as Band 7 Epilepsy Senior specialist Nurse. This is a rewarding role for a skilled practitioner who is passionate about delivering high-quality, person-centred care and improving outcomes for people living with epilepsy.

As part of a dynamic multidisciplinary team, you will provide specialist assessment, support and clinical management for patients across the epilepsy pathway. You will work closely with neurologists, specialist nurses, allied health professionals, primary care colleagues and community partners to ensure patients receive seamless, evidence-based care. We are seeking an enthusiastic and compassionate individual with excellent clinical, communication and interpersonal skills. Applicants must have a strong clinical background in neurology, with substantial experience in epilepsy care highly desirable. You will possess a comprehensive understanding of epilepsy and related neurological conditions, including their assessment, treatment and long-term management, and be confident working autonomously within a specialist role.

Independent prescribing is highly desirable for this role but is not essential, and candidates without a prescribing qualification are equally encouraged to apply.

Main duties of the job

• Deliver high-quality, patient-centred care to individuals living with Epilepsy.
• Run independent nurse-led clinics focused on proactive support and self-management.
• Work to prevent hospital admissions through early intervention, education, and ongoing monitoring.
• Contribute to the development and advancement of the Epilepsy Specialist Nurse role within the service.
• Support the ongoing growth and operational delivery of the Epilepsy Service at OUH
• Enhance the delivery and coordination of Epilepsy treatment options, ensuring patients receive timely and appropriate therapies.
• Collaborate closely with the multidisciplinary Epilepsy Team to improve service delivery and patient outcomes.
• Demonstrate strong motivation, enthusiasm, and commitment to continuous improvement in Epilepsy care.

Job responsibilities
You will be the professional clinical link between all areas of care for individuals with Epilepsy and provide care and support for patients from diagnosis through to ongoing treatment and care. The Epilepsy Specialist Nurse will have

• To promote clinical excellence in the management of Epilepsy as a specialist nurse and to be working autonomously.
• To be a resource for in-depth knowledge of own specialist clinical area and actively disseminate relevant information through appropriate channels.
• to regularly support the VNS theatre lists
• To actively facilitate the delivery of expert specialised patient care based upon principles of evidence and best practice. This may be achieved either directly through personal contact or indirectly via supervision of practice.
• To provide information, advice and psychological support to patients, their families and health care professionals; liaising and referring on as necessary to the appropriate health care professional in hospital or the community. Qualifications
Essential

• Registered Nurse (NMC registration)

Desirable

• non medical prescriber

Experience
Essential

• Relevant post registration experience at band 6 level
• Evidence of comprehensive and relevant continuing professional development
• Evidence of working as part of a multi-disciplinary team

Desirable

• Post registration qualification in Neuroscience/MS

Skills
Essential

• Advanced Communication Skills.
• Ability to undertake teaching of staff and patients.
• excellent computer skills

• Demonstrates sound knowledge of current developments in the NHS
