Based at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth, the successful candidate will become part of a dynamic and highly supportive Gastroenterology and Hepatology department comprising 16 consultants with expertise spanning hepatology, advanced endoscopy, IBD, clinical nutrition, ERCP/EUS and upper GI therapeutics. The consultant team is supported by a strong multidisciplinary workforce, including seven registrars, three endoscopy clinical fellows and a dedicated hepatology nursing team of Clinical Nurse Specialists, creating a collaborative environment focused on delivering outstanding patient care and service innovation.
Main duties of the jobPortsmouth's hepatology service has grown significantly over the last decade and is now recognised as a regional leader in liver disease management. The department offers a comprehensive range of specialist services, including established liver transplant links with the Royal Free Hospital, a joint transplant satellite clinic, TIPSS provision, locoregional therapies for hepatocellular carcinoma, and nationally recognised services for alcohol-related liver disease, MASLD/MASH and hepatitis C. As a core member of the Wessex Hepatology Operational Delivery Network, the team is actively involved in delivering advanced therapies and driving service development. Job responsibilitiesThe role will comprise a mixture of outpatient clinical work, endoscopy and in-patient care, with supporting professional activity time. The successful candidate will join a team of 16 consultants in Gastroenterology and Hepatology with a wide range of specialist interests including advanced endoscopy, IBD, clinical nutrition, hepatology, ERCP/EUS and upper GI therapeutics. They are supported by a team of 7 registrars, 3 clinical fellows in endoscopy and several clinical nurse specialist teams, including 5 Hepatology Clinical Nurse Specialists. Candidates with a wide range of sub-specialty interests will be considered for this post as there are opportunities to support and develop services across the breadth of Hepatology. Provision of ERCP and / or EUS is not a requirement for this post, but it may be possible for this to be included for those with a Hepatobiliary sub-specialty interest.
This post will include a commitment to in-patient care of Hepatology specialty patients on an approximately 1:5 basis (currently in 3 week blocks; typically 25-30 in-patients). There is no direct post take of cases unless the patient has been admitted directly to the Gastroenterology and Hepatology ward.
Person SpecificationQualificationsEssential- Full GMC registration with a licence to practice
- MRCP or equivalent
Desirable- Sub-specialty accreditation in Hepatology
- Higher Degree (e.g. MD/PhD)
ExperienceEssential- Entry on the GMC specialist register via CCT in Gastroenterology (proposed date must be within 6 months), CESR or European Community Rights (for Consultant role)
- Wide experience of Hepatology and Gastroenterology
- Certified training in upper GI endoscopy
Desirable- Experience of service development
