Job summary
Croydon Health Services NHS Trust wishes to appoint a full-time fixed-term (12 months) Locum Consultant in Pain Medicine, with a specialist interest in Chronic Pain Management and potential to convert to a permanent post.

This post has been created to support and expand the Chronic Pain Service, improving access and reducing waiting times.

The successful applicant will provide expertise in:
  • Assessment and management of chronic pain conditions
  • Multidisciplinary pain management
  • Interventional pain procedures (where appropriate)
  • Option of one anaesthetic service provision session per week
  • Chronic Pain Clinics

This post does NOT include:
  • Intensive care responsibilities
  • On-call commitments

The post holder will work within a multidisciplinary pain team and contribute to service development and innovation.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will: Provide a comprehensive chronic pain service including: o Assessment, diagnosis, and management of chronic pain patients o Delivery of evidence-based treatment plans o Use of pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches Undertake: o Chronic pain outpatient clinics o Interventional pain procedures (e.g. injections, nerve blocks where appropriate) Work within a multidisciplinary team (MDT) framework Contribute to: o Service development and expansion of pain pathways o Development of integrated care models across community and secondary care Participate in: o Clinical governance o Audit and quality improvement o Teaching and training activities Supervise junior medical staff where appropriate

Job responsibilities
  1. To provide a service and this includes all aspects of treatment and relevant management duties for the proper functioning of the Chronic Pain department.
  2. Responsible for covering colleagues periods of annual leave and short-term sickness.
  3. Clinical supervision of junior medical staff as a shared responsibility with other consultant colleagues.
  4. Responsible for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to Continuing Medical Education and clinical governance initiatives.
  5. Responsible for out-patient clinic commitments in peripheral hospitals as agreed by Croydon Health Services
  6. To contribute to departmental research interests in accordance with the Trusts R&D framework.
  7. To contribute to the Audit Programme.
  8. To take an active role in the formulation, implementation and monitoring of the Trusts Objectives. This may include assisting with discussions regarding service plans and developments with both internal and external agencies.
  9. To conduct all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan for the Department.
  10. To exercise professional leadership for all staff working in the specialty. This will include fostering and developing projects focused towards these ends and ensuring that the momentum of post qualification professional education and other appropriate training is maintained.
  11. To work in conjunction with clinical and professional colleagues to ensure that the productivity of staff within the specialty is maintained and their job satisfaction is enhanced. This may include involvement in the appraisal process for junior colleagues.
  12. To undertake management duties as agreed with the Clinical Lead, Clinical Director and Head of Service.

Basic qualification / Registration
Essential
  • Full GMC registration; CCT in Anaesthesia or equivalent
Desirable
  • FFPMRCA or equivalent

Other qualifications
Essential
  • Formal training in Pain Management
Desirable
  • MSc/MD in Pain Medicine or related field

Relevant clinical experience
Essential
  • Experience in chronic pain management; experience in outpatient pain clinics; MDT working
Desirable
  • Advanced training in Pain Medicine; interventional pain experience

Management experience
Essential
  • Understanding of NHS structure; leadership in MDT settings; service organisation
Desirable
  • Experience leading service development projects

Research

  • Participation in audit/QI projects

  • Publications or research in pain medicine
