Job summary
THIS POST IS A PERMANENT PART TIME 0.5 WTE POST. BAND 5 OR 6 DEPENDANT ON EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICAITONS. THIS IS NOT A TRAINING POST.

This is a unique opportunity to work in the UK Anaerobe Reference Unit (UKARU) and contribute to the continued development of anaerobic microbiology reference services for the UK and beyond.

Applications are invited from candidates who are enthusiastic, well-motivated and innovative, with good organisational and practical abilities supported by scientific knowledge.

The successful applicant will be expected to assist in the provision of a full reference service for anaerobic bacteria. Experience of working with anaerobic bacteria is highly desirable, but the candidate must have experience of working in a medical microbiology laboratory.

Candidates should possess well developed interpersonal and communication skills and an ability to support individual and team working. Being flexible in your approach to work, self-motivated and with good practical skills will be fundamental to your role.

Main duties of the job
You will use your knowledge and skills as a Biomedical Scientist to contribute to anaerobic bacteriology reference and research work. You will assist in building a strong team and support the Senior Biomedical Scientists to enable continual improvements in the department and throughout the Microbiology Network.

The laboratory is an IBMS approved training laboratory. The Public Health Wales, Microbiology network is ISO 15189 accredited. An understanding of good laboratory practice and ISO15189 quality management is essential.

To ensure that the laboratory can provide a 6/7-day service, depending on service demands, the post holder will be expected to participate in weekend & Bank Holiday working.

Our team offers a varied, challenging and rewarding work environment, with the opportunity to be at the forefront of anaerobic bacteriology reference work including the utilisation of next generation sequencing technologies.

Public Health Wales Microbiology Cardiff is one of the largest Microbiology Laboratories in Wales, providing diagnostic services to hospitals, clinics and general practitioners throughout the Principality.

Informal visits to the laboratory are encouraged only for candidates who have been shortlisted.

Qualifications
Essential
  • Biomedical Sciences Degree or other equivalent qualification that has permitted HCPC registration
  • Evidence of HCPC registration

Desirable
  • Undertaking HCPC registration

Previous experience
Essential
  • Microbiology experience in a UK laboratory
  • Quality experience
  • Health and safety awareness
  • Experience of molecular techniques
  • Anaerobic bacteriology experience

Skills
Essential
  • Experience using a laboratory information system
  • Experience using Excel
  • Evidence of anaerobic bacteriology practice
