Job summary
An exciting opportunity exists for a Clinical Pharmacy Technician to assist the department in the delivery of a comprehensive medicines management service to the wards. The post holder will be required to provide support to all aspects of the Pharmacy Service including the dispensary.

This role is ONLY eligible for sponsorship in limited individual circumstances. Applicants MUST details within their application how they meet eligibility for sponsorship if you require sponsoring for a skilled worker visa.

Main duties of the job
Applicants must be:
  • Registered as a practicing Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) with a current up to date CPD record
  • Have a current nationally recognised Accredited Checking Technician (ACT) qualification or be willing to work towards this
  • Demonstrable experience as working at Band 4 Technician level.

Job responsibilities
The postholder will be responsible for managing the stock lists for Theatres in collaboration with the senior theatre staff and the pharmacy assistants who do the routine top ups.

Will be responsible for leading on the governance aspects of medicines in theatres including ensuring that all audits are up to date and action plans are in place.

It will be expected that the postholder would spend at least 25% of their time working with the theatre team.

Support the theatre senior pharmacist with managing medicine supply issues.

Along with the theatre pharmacist be the point of contact for any issues relating to medicines in theatres.

The post holder will be responsible for delivering a high standard of clinical care to patients through the provision of a safe and effective clinical medicines optimisation service. Work is managed by the individual.
  • Provide comprehensive technical support to all members of the department in the provision of a dispensary service.
  • Ensure the timely and efficient delivery of requests for pharmaceutical products across the Trust by the dispensing and issuing of prescriptions, signed orders and controlled drugs orders establishing and maintain a communication link between pharmacy and the wards served.
  • Providing a ward-based Pharmacy Technician service to designated wards. This will include medicines reconciliation of newly admitted patients, assessment of patients own drugs, overseeing the ordering of medication and c-ordinating the supply of discharge medication.
  • To counsel patients on the routine use of their medicines, providing specific information to any special requirements ensuring patients understand their discharge medication.
  • To act as an Accredited Checking Technician under a nationally recognised accuracy checking technician framework. To perform a final accuracy check on dispensed items against prescriptions and requisitions. To show continuous competency in checking accurately and safely.
  • Supervising student pharmacy technicians, pharmacy support workers, dispensers and trainees in the department and across all wards.
  • Liaising with pharmacists and a multi-disciplinary team to ensure a proficient and comprehensive medicines management service to all patients and staff across the integrated care system supporting across primary and secondary care.

Person Specification
Education and Qualifications
Essential
  • Knowledge of medicines management, including relevant legislation and policies acquired through NVQ3 or BTEC equivalent level qualification plus specialist training and experience to degree or equivalent level
  • Knowledge of pharmaceutical technical procedures acquired through training, NVQ3, BTEC in pharmaceutical science or equivalent plus other additional training for checking dispensed prescriptions, supervising a technical area within the pharmacy to degree or equivalent level
Desirable
  • Team leading or management qualification

Experience
Essential
  • Demonstrable recent experience of successfully delivering technical pharmacy services as a qualified technician
  • Working knowledge of a broad range of medicines and their safety issues
  • Understanding of the legal responsibilities of the profession
  • Experience of working with a Pharmacy computer system e.g. CMM or EMIS, and procurement systems such as Powergate
  • Experience of liaising with patients and healthcare staff
Desirable
  • Experience of ward-based services, including Patients Own Drug schemes
  • Recent hospital experience of working as a registered pharmacy technician
  • Interaction with other departments for provision of pharmaceutical supplies
  • Experience of dealing with difficult and complex situations, queries and complaints
  • Experience of negotiating with healthcare staff, suppliers and/or external organisations

Skills, Ability and Knowledge
Essential
  • Knowledge of prescribing, dispensing and administration processes in the hospital settings
  • Ability to cope with busy dispensing workload
  • Computer literate and able to use Windows applications including Microsoft Word and Excel, and internet
  • Good range of pharmaceutical knowledge
  • Able to interpret highly complex data
  • Ability to communicate with a wide range of people, including members of the public and all levels of healthcare professionals
  • Good analytical and evaluative skills with the ability to investigate queries solve problems and act if appropriate
  • Methodical with effective organisational skills in the workplace
  • Interest in expending knowledge and self-development
