Job summary
Are you an enthusiastic and motivated Occupational Therapist looking for your next challenge? We have an exciting opportunity to join the Palliative Care Therapy Team at St John's Hospice in a Band 6 fixed-term or secondment position.

This role is ideal for an experienced Band 6 Occupational Therapist seeking to broaden their expertise within specialist palliative care, or for an ambitious Band 5 Occupational Therapist ready to take the next step in their career development.

As part of our multidisciplinary team, you will provide specialist Occupational Therapy interventions across a variety of settings, including St John's Hospice inpatient unit, the Day Therapy Unit and in patient homes across the community.

You will play a key role in embedding our rehabilitative palliative care model, empowering people with life-limiting illnesses to live as independently and meaningfully as possible. Using a person-centred approach, you will complete holistic assessments deliver interventions, including:
  • Equipment provision and environmental adaptations
  • Discharge planning and care coordination
  • Activity advice
  • Symptom self-management support
  • Signposting to appropriate services and resources

Interventions may be delivered on an individual basis or through therapeutic group sessions.

To provide holistic Occupational Therapy assessments within the inpatient unit, day therapy unit and patient homes.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
  • Diploma/Degree in Occupational Therapy
  • Registered with the Health Care Professions Council
Desirable
  • Management/Leadership qualification
  • Will have completed the L'APPLE course and have taken Occupational Therapy students.
  • Post graduate courses associated with Palliative care and the end of life patient.

Experience
Essential
  • Significant clinical Occupational Therapy experience including significant experience working with patients who have a palliative care diagnosis.
  • Formal supervision of staff.

Knowledge
Essential
  • To have an understanding of the guidance around palliative and end of life care.
  • To have a full understanding of the current NHS issues and initiatives, professional standards, CPD, clinical governance.

Skills/ Abilities
Essential
  • To have an understanding of adaptive equipment and minor adaptations
  • Effective time management and prioritisation skills
  • Ability to work in a team.
  • Good interpersonal skills and empathy.
  • Experience of designing education programmes to promote health and wellbeing. i.e. fatigue management and relaxation programmes.
  • To have had previous experience organising and facilitating group work.
  • Ability to give and receive instructions to people with a variety of communication abilities.
Desirable
  • Will have completed the L'APPLE course and have taken Occupational Therapy students.

Additional Requirements
Essential
  • Access to car for use at work and ability to travel within the required geographical area
