More detail about the role
Make an impact. Develop your expertise. Enjoy an exceptional way of life.

Are you a Specialist Clinical Scientist or Clinical Technologist in Diagnostic Radiation Physics, ready for your next professional challenge?

We are seeking an experienced and motivated individual to join our Clinical and Radiation Physics team in a senior role with real influence. Ideally you will already be a Medical Physics Expert (MPE) in Diagnostic Radiology. However, for the right candidate we are open to supporting MPE accreditation through a structured developmental post.

You will be actively encouraged and mentored to further develop your expertise, contribute to significant service re-development programmes, and apply your specialist knowledge across a large and varied clinical and research portfolio. You will have opportunities to shape future diagnostic services, including contributing to major initiatives such as the Devon Diagnostic Centre (DDC) at NHS Nightingale Hospital Exeter; an innovative service helping to reduce waiting times and streamline patient pathways across Devon.

With planned service expansion, there are exciting opportunities to work on high impact Trust wide projects, supported and funded by training and development, flexible working, clear career progression, and excellent opportunities to engage in research and innovation, including a planned installation of a Photon Counting CT scanner.

And then there is Devon; a county of vibrant cities, stunning coastlines and dramatic moorland landscapes. To make relocating easier, we offer a generous relocation and attraction package to help you settle in and kick-start your career with us.

About the role
As our Specialist Healthcare Scientist (Diagnostic and Radiation Protection), you will act as a Medical Physics Expert (MPE) in Diagnostic Radiology for the Royal Devon and a range of collaborative partners.

This is a highly autonomous and varied role. You will plan and deliver a comprehensive programme of scientific and radiation protection support for services using ionising and non-ionising radiation across North, East and Mid Devon, covering an imaging portfolio of approximately 200 systems, including X-ray, CT, Mammography, a Hybrid Theatre and Nuclear Medicine.

Diverse work, real variety; No two days will be the same.

You will work across a broad portfolio including
  • Radiology and Cardiology departments
  • Hybrid Theatre
  • Community hospitals across the region
  • External clients such as dental and veterinary practices
  • Providers of diagnostic medical services and research, including the University of Exeter

Leadership and influence
You will work closely with the other Medical Physics Experts (MPEs) Radiation Protection Advisers (RPAs) and the Head of Clinical Radiation Physics to ensure safe, compliant and effective service delivery. There will be opportunities to deputise for the Lead MPE, further strengthening your leadership skills and professional profile.

As part of the Clinical and Radiation Physics team, you will collaborate with colleagues in Nuclear Medicine Physics, Radiation Safety, and Non-ionising Physics, as well as with clinical colleagues and private customers. You will also benefit from being part of the wider Medical Physics service at the Royal Devon, with access to well established regional expert networks and training centres.

About you
You will be keen to join a small, supportive, and highly skilled team, dedicated to delivering expert scientific advice to colleagues and external partners.

You will
  • Be an HCPC registered Clinical Scientist or RCT registered Clinical Technologist with substantial relevant experience
  • Be a Medical Physics Expert (MPE) in Diagnostic Radiology, or have the appropriate experience to complete the MPE accreditation process
  • Hold a full UK driving licence
  • Have access to a suitable vehicle to transport test equipment across the network

Developmental post opportunity
We are open to appointing at Band 7 for candidates who show strong potential but do not yet meet all the criteria. In this case, we will offer a structured development plan including support to complete the MPE accreditation pathway.

This is an excellent opportunity for a registered Clinical Scientist or Technologist ready to progress into a senior specialist role with expert mentoring and long-term career development.

Why join our team?
Exceptional training and career development; We genuinely invest in our people. We are among the first Trusts to re-establish the apprenticeship route for Medical Physics Technologists in Radiation Physics and continue to grow our Consultant Clinical Scientist training programme.

We support development through our accredited in-house training centre (PTP, STP, HSST), as well as carefully selected external courses, working with you to shape the best pathway for all your career ambitions.

Learning beyond qualifications; Professional development goes far beyond formal training. Our team facilitates professional and scientific conferences across the South West and maintains strong networks throughout the Peninsula and wider region, enabling shared learning and rapid adoption of best practice.

Research, innovation and world class facilities; Research and innovation are central to how we deliver modern healthcare. Alongside our purpose-built commercial research centre, we work in close partnership with the University of Exeter and host
  • The NIHR Exeter Clinical Research Facility
  • The Wellcome Wolfson Centre for Medical Research
  • A Postgraduate Education Centre
  • UKAS accredited laboratories

Our collaboration continues through the Mireille Gillings Neuroimaging Centre, providing advanced PET-CT and MRI facilities. The Clinical and Radiation Physics team plays a vital role in ensuring safety, quality and innovation at this flagship research facility.
