Job summaryThe post holder will work in partnership with the Ward / Department Sister/Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) to ensure that the standards of nursing care are met at all times. This includes assisting the ward / department Sister and the whole team to meet the agreed standards of hospital cleanliness within the work environment.
To provide and be responsible for the assessment of care needs, the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care and to carry out all relevant forms of care competently without direct supervision.
Communicate with members of the multidisciplinary team to facilitate continuity of care and promote effective team working.
To participate in the teaching, supervision and preceptorship/mentorship of learners and other staff. In the absence of a more senior nurse, take charge of the ward.
To act as an effective role model promoting excellence through practice.
To support the Charge Nurse/Senior Sister to monitor the safety and quality of care for patients.
Main duties of the jobTo be responsible for the unsupervised assessment of patient care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of plans of care, ensuring high standards of evidence-based care using a defined model of care.
To undertake all nursing procedures in accordance with Trust policies and ensure that these procedures and policies are understood and adhered to by all staff, within own management responsibility.
To communicate with patients with significant others with empathy and reassurance regarding, assessment, care and treatment.
To ensure a positive focussed service incorporating patients' feedback to maintain and improve patient care.
To maintain accurate and comprehensive nursing records using appropriate documentation.
To facilitate early discharge planning enabling appropriate arrangements to be in place for patients leaving hospital, making referrals and providing information to community services, as required, in order to achieve a safe and timely discharge from hospital.
Ensure safe custody and administration of drugs according to The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital Trust Policy and procedures, including intravenous medication where appropriate.

Job responsibilitiesIn the absence of the Junior Sister/Charge Nurse to be responsible for the day-to-day management of the ward.
To ensure the compliance of mandatory training and appraisal requirements for delegated Nursing Assistants.
The post holder will be expected to demonstrate digital competence and actively contribute to the Trust's digital strategy. This includes promoting the effective use of Epic EHR, ensuring high quality electronic documentation, maintaining information governance standards, and supporting colleagues in developing digital capability.
Supervise junior staff, or unqualified staff, in all aspects of care. Ensure that staff has the knowledge, skills and resources to carry out care delegated to them.
To work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to promote good communication and a multi-disciplinary approach to patient care.
To participate in the audit of the principles of the Essence of Care benchmarking process, and implement the action plan as required.
Person SpecificationEducation & professional QualificationsEssential- First Level Registration
- Evidence of recent and ongoing professional development
Desirable- Post qualification in relevant speciality
- Recognized teaching and assessing qualification or working towards
Knowledge & ExperienceEssential- Awareness of current professional nursing issues
- NHS experience of working within multi-disciplinary teams
