Job summary
An outstanding leadership opportunity in Radiology.

This is a rare opportunity for an experienced Radiography leader to step into a pivotal senior role, shaping the future of imaging services at the Royal United Hospitals Bath. You will influence strategy at scale, leading a large, skilled, dedicated and high-performing workforce delivering imaging to over 340,000 patients each year. You will drive quality, innovation and service transformation while making a meaningful difference to patients and staff every day.

As Clinical Lead Radiographer, you will provide professional, operational and strategic leadership as part of the Radiology Triumvirate. You will be accountable for delivering a safe, high-quality, patient-centred imaging service aligned to Trust objectives, national standards and regulatory requirements.

You will lead service transformation, workforce strategy and innovation across a large and complex Radiology service, ensuring delivery of performance targets while fostering a culture of continuous improvement and high performance.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will:
  • provide strategic, operational and professional leadership for the Radiology department, working as part of the Radiology Triumvirate.
  • be accountable for delivering a safe, high-quality, patient-centred imaging service, aligned with Trust objectives, national standards and regulatory requirements, and for leading service development, workforce strategy and innovation.

Job description
Job responsibilities
  • Provide overall leadership for Radiology services, ensuring effective delivery across all imaging modalities.
  • Work with the Triumvirate to develop and implement strategic plans, service improvements and transformation programmes.
  • Take responsibility for all radiation issues within Radiology, ensuring compliance with IR(ME)R, clinical governance standards, and national guidance, while maintaining high standards of patient care.
  • Lead and support Team Leads to improve service delivery, optimise pathways, and introduce new technologies and techniques.
  • Act as budget holder for Radiology ensuring effective financial management, cost improvement and income generation, inputting into annual budget setting.
  • Advise and be involved in equipment replacement, new build projects and maintenance contracts for Radiology equipment and services.
  • Manage services within available resources and budget, ensuring delivery of performance targets and KPIs.
  • Provide strong professional leadership, fostering a culture of continuous improvement, innovation and high performance.
  • Represent Radiology at Trust, regional and national level, working with partners to support integrated imaging services.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
  • BSc (Hons) Diagnostic Radiography or equivalent recognised qualification
  • HCPC registration as a Diagnostic Radiographer
  • Postgraduate qualification in leadership, management, advanced practice or healthcare governance
  • Evidence of ongoing CPD relevant to clinical imaging and leadership

Desirable
  • MSC in Healthcare Management, MBA, or equivalent

Knowledge and experience
Essential
  • Significant senior management experience in Radiology or Imaging services, managing multi-disciplinary teams
  • Proven experience in service improvement and change management
  • Financial and budgetary management experience
  • Experience in large building / equipment replacement projects
  • In-depth understanding of diagnostic imaging modalities, NHS policy, and regulatory frameworks (CQC, IR(ME)R), etc)
  • Knowledge of workforce planning and digital imaging systems (PACS/RIS)
  • Experience of working autonomously and making complex clinical decisions
  • Experience handling complex or sensitive communication with patients, staff and service users
  • Experience supporting or leading in situations involving challenging behaviour
  • Comprehensive understanding of diagnostic imaging principles, processes and safety standards
  • Understanding of NHS structures, Trust governance and national Radiology priorities
  • Understanding of key performance indicators (KPIs) and operational metrics within Radiology Knowledge of clinical effectiveness, quality assurance and accreditation requirements
  • Awareness of COSHH, HASAW and other relevant health & safety frameworks

Physical skills & emotional effort
Essential
  • Ability to listen to patient and staff concerns empathetically and professionally, and deal confidentially, professionally and objectively with a range of issues
  • In a clinical situation, ability to focus on the individual patient undergoing procedure & avoiding distractions
  • Dexterity and visualisation skills to enable accurate positioning of patients and/or equipment for optimum image production
  • As a member of the front-line clinical team, ability to deal emotionally, but professionally, with traumatic situations such as severe patient injury/illness or patient death, supporting staff in these situations too
  • Ability to deal empathetically and professionally with patients and relatives receiving diagnoses of major illness/cancer
  • Ability to treat all patients equally no matter what pathology has been demonstrated during an examination

Requirements due to working environment
Essential
  • Requirement to deal with hazards - eg x-rays, manual handling issues & working in low-level lighting
  • Exposure on a regular (daily) basis to unpleasant working conditions and the requirement to deal with hazards - eg, bodily fluids (sputum, blood, vomit, urine), faeces odours, open wounds, necrotic body parts, infectious diseases etc
  • Working out of hours where may be subjected to lone working environment
  • Ability to deal effectively with potential verbal/physical abuse from patients/relatives/carers
  • Regular use of VDU's for a prolonged period of time
  • Ability to deal with conflict due to pressure & demands of providing an efficient service from a broad referral base
