Job summary
Haygarth Ward is a 24 bed specialist gastroenterology ward caring for a variety of patients with many different conditions within the GI field such as: liver disease, pancreatitis and gastric ulcers and patients who are detoxing from alcohol. We work closely with the endoscopy unit which is located next to the ward and we will occasionally take direct admits from the unit to the ward.

You will be welcomed by a dynamic and hard-working team where development is a priority and are keen to help others succeed and enjoy their roles.We are committed to providing compassionate care for our patients and enjoy our work whilst doing so. We are lucky to have strong working relationships with the gastroenterology consultants who have lead training for nursing staff to develop their specialist knowledge and understanding of gastroenterology.

We are looking for equally enthusiastic and energetic individuals who are eager to learn, willing to work together as a team but are self-motivated and can work independently when needed.

This area is both rewarding and challenging whilst caring for some of the most complex patients in the trust.

Main duties of the job
  • Acting as a Named Nurse, to maintain accountability for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating programmes of care within the framework of team nursing.
  • To co-ordinate the patients' discharge arrangements in accordance with the RUH Discharge Policy.
  • To promote a patient focused approach to care in collaboration with all relevant health professionals.
  • To educate patients and their carers as required where a need has been identified.
  • To provide information which enables patients to make choices about adopting a healthy lifestyle.
  • To complete patient documentation to Trust standard.
  • To maintain a safe ward/department environment.
  • To assist in establishing and monitoring protocols/care pathways.
  • To participate in the promotion and maintenance of effective communication.
  • To ensure patient confidentiality

Qualifications
Essential
  • UK Nurse registered with Nursing & Midwifery Council
  • Recent evidence of professional development

Desirable
  • Previous experience / placement in gastroenterology

Knowledge and Experience
Essential
  • Thorough and up-to-date knowledge of nursing theory and best practice.
  • Understanding of equality and diversity and how to apply it to self.
  • Understanding of NMC Code of Practice and requirements of it for own practice and behaviour.
  • Awareness of importance in adhering to infection control standards

Desirable
  • Knowledge / interest of gastroenterology conditions such as liver disease
  • Evidence of training in additional skills e.g. cannulation/ venepuncture, male catheterisation etc.
