Job SummaryThe band 6 Alcohol Specialist Nurse will be an integral member of the Drug and Alcohol Care Team which provides care and treatment for patients with drug or alcohol misuse issues. The band 6 Alcohol Specialist Nurse will work as an autonomous practitioner in the assessment, implementation and evaluation of patient care for those who present with alcohol misuse and alcohol related injuries. They will advise Trust staff on the care and management of acute alcohol withdrawal, deliver training to staff on the management of alcohol dependency and addiction and will be responsible for holding a caseload of individual patients who are not engaging in the community but continue to come to hospital and patients who are pre or post detox.
The band 6 Alcohol Specialist Nurse will be willing to be flexible to meet the needs of the team and must demonstrate knowledge and passion in working within the specialty of alcohol misuse.
The current working hours are 0800 - 1800 4 days per week, including weekend working.
** Please note that in the near future the Alcohol Care Team will formally become the Drug and Alcohol Care Team, therefore the job title and job description will change to Drug and Alcohol Specialist Nurse. The successful applicant will be responsible for the care, management and support of patients attending hospital with drug or alcohol issues **
Main Duties of the Job- To comprehensively assess patients, gaining information about their physical health, mental health, social issues as well as their alcohol history to format a plan of care based on the patients individual needs.
- To advise clinical staff on the management of patients experiencing acute alcohol withdrawal, including detoxification medication and vitamin prescribing.
- To advise and support emergency department staff on the admission criteria for patients with alcohol misuse issues attending the department.
- To liaise with and build strong professional relationships with other healthcare professionals both within the hospital and external agencies to meet the needs of the patient.
- To provide training to Trust staff on screening and brief interventions, and to participate in the development and delivery of education programmes.
- To act as team leader in the absence of senior staff.

Person SpecificationExperienceEssential- Significant post registration experience in the speciality of alcohol misuse including experience of detoxification.
- Experience in the management of acute alcohol withdrawal.
- Experience in developing and delivering teaching programmes.
Desirable- Experience of working in alcohol liaison within an acute hospital.
- Experience of data collection and use of IT Microsoft and Excel packages.
QualificationsEssential- RN (Adult, mental health or learning disability) with current NMC registration
- Educated to degree level or working towards.
- Evidence of continued professional development
Desirable- Certificate in counselling or other counselling / psychosocial qualification.
- Teaching / assessing qualification.
- Recognised post registration qualification in alcohol misuse.
- Non-medical prescriber
