Job summary
We are seeking an experienced and motivated nursing professional to provide clinical and operational leadership within the Emergency Department. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring the delivery of high-quality, patient-focused care that meets the needs and expectations of patients while supporting the wider objectives of the Directorate and clinical teams.

You will lead and manage staff within a defined team, overseeing appraisals, rota management, recruitment, staff development, and student supervision. Working closely with the Matron, Deputy Nurse Director and Nurse Director, you will help deliver a safe, effective and compassionate service across the department.

The role includes responsibility for maintaining high standards of evidence-based nursing practice, promoting Emergency Department competencies, and ensuring compliance with professional standards, Trust policies and clinical guidelines. You will also act as a clinical specialist, providing expert advice to colleagues and external agencies where required, and contribute to the department's teaching and development programmes.

Main duties of the job
Clinical Leadership and Management

• Provide visible leadership within the Emergency Department, ensuring safe, effective, patient-focused care.
• Support day-to-day operational management, including staffing, rotas, and resource allocation.
• Lead and supervise nursing teams, healthcare support workers, and students.
• Contribute to recruitment, appraisal, induction, and staff development.

Clinical Care

• Deliver evidence-based emergency nursing care, including assessment, triage, and emergency interventions.
• Work with multidisciplinary teams to support patient flow and discharge planning.
• Maintain high standards of medicines management, safeguarding, infection prevention, and patient safety.
• Communicate effectively and compassionately with patients and families.

Quality, Governance and Service Improvement

• Participate in audits, incident reviews, and quality improvement initiatives.
• Support implementation of policies, procedures, and governance standards.
• Maintain accurate and confidential patient records.
• Ensure safe and cost-effective use of equipment and resources.

Education and Staff Development

• Mentor students, newly qualified nurses, and support staff.
• Support induction, training, and professional development.
• Promote reflective practice and evidence-based care

Qualifications
Essential

• Registered Nurse (valid with NMC)
• To have completed the national practice assessor training or equivalent teaching and assessing qualification for those with ENB998.
• Degree or evidence of actively working towards degree level or evidence of equivalent health care related study
• Post registration A&E course or equivalent study to post graduate level

Desirable

• Master's level study
• Certificate in management and leadership (or equivalent)
