An exciting opportunity has arisen at Yeovil District Hospital for a Clinical Teaching Fellow in Obstetrics & Gynaecology on a full time, permanent contract.

This unique post offers the chance to contribute to an established and highly regarded teaching programme delivered in partnership with the University of Bristol Medical School while working within a supportive and experienced O&G team.

The successful candidate will play a key role in the education and supervision of undergraduate medical students, helping to deliver a high-quality learning experience for approximately 70 students placed within the hospital each year. Alongside teaching responsibilities, you will gain valuable clinical experience within a busy and diverse Obstetrics and Gynaecology department.

You will join a well-established team of consultants and specialist clinicians with interests including:

• Urogynaecology
• Menstrual Dysfunction
• Minimal Access Surgery
• Endometriosis
• Benign Gynaecological Surgery
• Maternal Medicine
• Colposcopy
• Cancer Fast-Track Services
• The Somerset-wide Gynaecological Oncology Service

Main duties of the job
You will be responsible for delivering a variety of engaging and innovative teaching sessions, including:

• Case-based learning facilitation
• Clinical skills teaching
• Bedside teaching
• Clinical reasoning sessions
• Simulation-based training
• Student induction sessions
• Small-group tutorials
• History-taking and examination skills teaching
• Inter-Academy Hub teaching sessions

You will also contribute to the assessment and development of medical students through:

• OSCE examinations
• Workplace-based assessments, including Mini-CEX and Case-Based Discussions
• Provision of timely, constructive feedback
• Identification of student learning needs and development of appropriate learning objectives

The post holder will act as a professional role model and mentor, supporting students academically and personally. This includes helping identify students who may require additional support and signposting them to appropriate pastoral and educational resources.

Clinical Responsibilities
To support ongoing clinical development, the post includes participation in Obstetrics & Gynaecology services and the resident on-call rota.

Clinical duties will include:

• Participation in the Obstetrics and Gynaecology on-call rota (1 in 8 frequency)
• Assessment and management of acute obstetric and gynaecology patients
• Theatre sessions
• Gynaecology outpatient clinics
• Antenatal clinics
• Exposure to both elective and emergency care across the specialty

Job responsibilities
The post is structured as 80% undergraduate medical education and 20% clinical Obstetrics & Gynaecology, allowing the successful candidate to play a significant role in teaching whilst continuing their clinical development.

You will become an integral member of the Undergraduate Medical Education Team, delivering high-quality teaching to approximately 70 medical students from the University of Bristol Medical School who are placed within the acute hospital.

Teaching activities will include:

• Case-based learning
• Bedside teaching
• Clinical skills teaching
• Simulation-based education
• Preparation of students for clinical practice and assessments

You will primarily teach Year 4 students undertaking placements within the Reproductive Health and Child Health Programme.

Student Assessment and Support
As part of the role, you will:

• Formatively assess student performance and progression
• Provide constructive feedback to support learning and development
• Participate in Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs)
• Undertake workplace-based assessments, including:

• Mini-CEX
• Case-Based Discussions (CBDs)
• Clinical Skills Assessments

Educational and clinical supervision will be provided throughout the post.

Clinical Commitments
Alongside your teaching responsibilities, you will maintain active clinical involvement within the Obstetrics & Gynaecology department.

The teaching role is combined with participation in the departmental on-call rota at a frequency of 1 in 8, providing ongoing exposure to both elective and acute Obstetrics & Gynaecology practice.

• Full GMC registration
• Registrar-level (2nd on-call) experience in General Obstetrics & Gynaecology
• Competence in General Obstetrics & Gynaecology at ST3 level or above
• Strong clinical assessment and decision-making skills
• The ability to identify and manage acutely unwell patients
• Excellent communication, organisational and teamworking skills
• An enthusiasm for teaching, mentoring and supporting the next generation of doctors

Essential

• Full GMC registration
• MBBS or equivalent
• MRCOG part 1

Desirable

• Full RCOG membership

Experience

• Assessment of sick patients and ability to manage common conditions in obstetrics and gynaecology at an ST3+ level
• Ability to work at ST3+ level in obstetrics and gynaecology
• Resuscitation experience

Desirable

• Teaching of students, junior medical staff and nursing staff.
