We have an exciting opportunity for an Invasive Cardiac Physiologist to join our friendly, skilled team. You'll play a key role in supporting cardiac procedures and ensuring the highest standards of patient care.

You will work as an advanced-level healthcare science practitioner within the field of invasive cardiac physiology, performing and interpreting complex invasive cardiovascular investigations, interventions, and long-term device monitoring services for elective, urgent, and emergency patients ensuring the delivery of high-quality care.

You will lead on service improvement, contribute to research and development, and provide specialist training and supervision to junior colleagues. This role requires a high degree of autonomy, clinical expertise, and decision-making responsibilities to ensure the highest standards of patient care.

You will be expected to contribute to the on-call rota for the Cath Lab.

Main duties of the job

Plan and prioritise workload to support the effective delivery of the invasive services.

Assist with organising timetables and clinic lists to fully utilise available resources.

Responsible for managing and prioritising own caseload of patients with implanted devices, maintaining accurate records of all contacts and interventions with patients, carers, and healthcare workers.

Perform interrogation and analysis of pacemaker/devices leads during implantation, and interrogation, analysis and reprogramming of the pacemaker/ICD/CRT once implanted at regular follow up clinics to a high standard in accordance with British Heart Rhythm society (BHRS) guidelines and department minimum standards, with sufficient experience and knowledge to ask for consultant overview where appropriate.

The post holder must be able to competently provide haemodynamic monitoring and electrophysiological measurements during coronary angiography/intervention and alert the operator to any change in patient condition.

Identify and advise when insufficient data is obtained to answer the clinical question and proactively suggest/arrange additional investigations. Produce an accurate and comprehensive report for each investigation, with responsibility for own caseload ensuring it is accurately uploaded onto the cardiology reporting systems.

Job responsibilities

Perform highly specialist complex investigations, interpretation, reporting and where applicable treatment, independently and unsupervised in the field of Invasive Cardiology.

Responsible for the interpretation of complex clinical information and applying theory to deliver a comprehensive assessment and analysis of pacemaker/ICD/CRT systems, including the interpretation and reporting of information you personally acquire.

Obtain relevant clinical information by taking a clinical history from each patient and identify through analysis of pacemaker/ICD/CRT system areas where clinical improvement can be achieved through reprogramming of the system. Proactively treat clinical signs and symptoms during follow up clinics where possible and advise clinicians when other treatment is required.

Be independent practitioner and lead cases in Cardiac Angiography/PCI including interpretation, reporting, checking adequate stock levels of consumables, record keeping and patient care.

Act appropriately in the event of significant adverse findings within a Physiologist led investigation, alerting medical staff when immediate medical attention is required. Demonstrating awareness of clinical conditions/clinical events that may occur during investigations and ensure swift and appropriate action is taken to minimise life threatening or significant medical events, particularly during cardiac device implants or follow-ups, cardiac angiography or PCI where adverse cardiac or respiratory events are likely to be induced. To provide immediate life support skills, including manual defibrillation, if required.

To contribute to the creation of a care environment and culture that delivers a consistently high standard of patient-centred care.

To participate in the development of a patient-centred service that responds to changing health care needs and provides rapid access to appropriate care.

To promote high professional standards and quality of care for patients, responding appropriately to concerns, complaints and commendations from the patients and user groups, assessing on a daily, individualised basis that the service is meeting its users' needs and expectations.

Act as patient advocate ensuring relevant investigations, procedures, treatments and follow-up appointments are arranged and understood, using professional channels of communication to address unnecessary or distressing delays along each individual's experience.

Maintain clear, concise and up-to-date clinical records. Produce detailed technical reports on all tests performed in a timely manner.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential
  • Evidence of formal training/qualifications equivalent to Healthcare Scientist Practitioner degree level; including BSc (Hons) Clinical Physiology
  • BHRS/IBHRE/EHRA certification

Desirable
  • Evidence of teaching i.e. Delivery of inhouse training to students, workplace colleagues.
  • Mentoring qualification

Experience

Essential
  • Significant proven independent CRM device experience including implant with autonomous reporting
  • Significant proven experience across a broad range of cardiac diagnostic and intervention procedures
  • Experience of audit and data reporting

Additional Criteria

Essential
  • Ability to work under own initiative, without direct supervision, and to manage own workload and that of others where appropriate
  • Ability to oversee junior members of staff and guide training as appropriate
  • Aptitude to work within small teams and wider multidisciplinary team
  • The ability to apply theory to practice.
  • Proficient in a wide range of IT systems including electronic patient records.
  • Able to work under pressure in complex and emergency situations.
  • Able to work as part of a team to ensure the best outcome for the patient.
  • Willingness to use technology to improve standards of care and support to our patients
  • Enthusiasm to develop skills and embrace innovation
  • To participate in Cath Lab on-call service.
