Job summary
This post sits within in a supportive, skilled and committed adolescent team. You will join two clinical psychologists, within a full MDT that provides high quality, evidence-based assessment and treatments. You will have the opportunity to develop your CBT skills with regular supervision from the consultant psychologist in the team; there are also opportunities to work systemically, including alongside our systemic therapists.

You will be responsible for your own clinical caseload and you will be involved in assessments, care planning and offering interventions for children and adolescents with support from the multi-disciplinary team. There are opportunities for joint working with a range of professionals within the team and across the service, for delivering teaching and for contributing to group work

Main duties of the job
The Adolescent Team is a dynamic and supportive multidisciplinary team of clinicians from the fields of psychiatry, clinical psychology, family therapy, nursing, social work, creative and occupational therapy.

The Adolescent Team provides assessments and evidence-based therapies to children and young people with complex mental health difficulties including depression, emerging psychosis, OCD, PTSD and social anxiety. The service has particularly close links with Youth Offending Services, and with our Assertive Outreach Team and various National and Specialist Services; we also work in close partnership with social care, education and local third sector services. The service is committed to providing high-quality, collaborative evidence-based services.

A culture of innovation exists within the team, as well as the Trust in general, and team members are involved in both research and service development projects. SLAM has an excellent support structure for clinicians interested in conducting research and quality improvement initiatives. There are strong academic links and regular CPD opportunities.

Job description
Job responsibilities
The postholder will provide a specialist psychology service to Southwark Adolescent Service including specialist assessment, treatment, planning, implementation and monitoring of outcomes. You will contribute to enabling other staff, service users and carers from diverse backgrounds to flourish by working to create a psychologically safe environment. Provision of clinical supervision and consultation as appropriate will be a key part of the role, as will undertaking service evaluation, audit and research as needed.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
  • Entry-level qualification in Applied Psychology (professional Doctorate, or combination of MSc plus PG Diploma level additional training) that has been accepted by the HCPC for purposes of professional registration. (A/I)
  • Registered with the HCPC as Practitioner Psychologist. (A/I)

Experience
Essential
  • Experience of receiving clinical supervision across a range of client needs.
  • Experience of psychological assessment and evidence-based treatment of adolescents with a range of psychological needs of a complex nature
  • Experience that supports working with, and addressing issues of, diversity within local communities. This may have been gained through work, research, volunteering and /or lived experience.
  • Experience of developing and carrying out research projects.

Knowledge
Essential
  • Theoretical knowledge of psychopathology and the evidence base for treatment of adolescents with complex mental health difficulties.
  • Knowledge of psychological assessment and clinical psychometrics.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation in relation to children and young people and mental health issues, child and adult protection, and equalities.
  • Doctoral level knowledge of psychological research methodology and complex statistical analysis.

Skills
Essential
  • To deliver psychological therapy across cultural and other differences.
  • To select and administer specialist psychological assessments, interpreting and integrating complex data that require analysis, interpretation and comparison, drawn from several sources.
  • To communicate skilfully and sensitively complex and sensitive information with clients, carers and colleagues overcoming barriers to communication including sensory, and emotional difficulties, cultural differences and hostility to or rejection of information.
