An exciting opportunity has arisen for a substantive Consultant in Acute Medicine to join our growing and forward-thinking team at University Hospitals Tees (UHT).

We are looking for an enthusiastic, innovative and collaborative Acute Physician who is passionate about delivering outstanding patient care while helping to redesign services for the future. Whether you are a newly qualified CCT holder or an experienced consultant seeking a fresh challenge, this role offers the chance to influence strategy, develop services and leave a lasting legacy.

The Role
You will join a team of dedicated Acute Physicians delivering consultant-led care across the acute medical pathway, including:

• Acute Assessment Units (AAU)
• Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC)
• Short Stay Medicine

The successful candidate will provide senior clinical decision-making for acutely unwell medical patients, contribute to service development, supervise and support trainees and locally employed doctors, and play an active role in clinical governance, education and quality improvement.

What We Are Looking For
Applicants must:

• Hold full GMC registration.
• Be on the GMC Specialist Register for General Internal Medicine/Acute Internal Medicine (or be within six months of CCT at interview).
• Hold MRCP or equivalent.
• Demonstrate excellent clinical skills in Acute Medicine.
• Show evidence of leadership, quality improvement and multidisciplinary working.
• Have a passion for developing services and improving patient outcomes.

Main duties of the job
Core Functions:
Maintain the highest clinical standards in the practice of Acute Medicine: leadership in a busy acute unit delivering comprehensive ward/board rounds enabling continuity of care and MDT involvement.

Provide clinical and educational supervision and management of resident medical staff

Be actively involved in the management of the department including attendance at the monthly Consultant and Directorate meetings, Audit Meetings and Consultant Away Days.

Take part in annual appraisals (mandatory for all Consultants), carried out by the Clinical Director. Appropriate time and assistance will be provided for preparation.

Active involvement in audit including at least one project annually

Continuing professional development. The Trust supports requirements for CPD as laid down by the Royal Collages and is committed to providing support for these activities.

Cover for colleagues' annual leave and other authorised absences

Participate in the Acute Medicine On-Call Rota.

Knowledge and Skills
Essential

• Broad and up-to-date knowledge of Acute Medicine, including the assessment, diagnosis, treatment and onward management of adults presenting with acute medical illness.
• Ability to manage high-acuity and clinically complex patients, including those with sepsis, respiratory illness, cardiac conditions, frailty, and acute deterioration.
• IT skills, inclusive of basic Microsoft systems plus ability to use and adapt to local programmes.
• Excellent written and spoken English language.

Desirable

• Evidence of research or innovative service developments

Qualifications and Training
Essential

• Full GMC registration
• MRCP or equivalent
• Relevant CCT or equivalent ('equivalence' must be confirmed by GMC by date of AAC)
• Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register via: CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview), CESR, European Community Rights

Desirable

• Training in appraisal techniques
• An appropriate higher degree (MD, PhD or equivalent)

Experience
Essential

• Wide range of experience in acute general medicine
• Minimum 2 years UK experience at ST7 or equivalent level.
• Evidence of clinical audit
• Understanding of clinical governance and a readiness to accept and acknowledge the responsibilities it implies
• Experience of supervising resident medical staff

Desirable

• Experience at consultant level within NHS
• Evidence of research or innovative service developments
• Experience in Acute Frailty
• Evidence of management and administration experience
• Management training
• Success in obtaining funding for research
• Other teaching skills/experience
