Job summary
Applications are invited for the post of Trust Doctor in Vascular Surgery (SpR equivalent).

We are a dynamic, motivated and forward thinking unit in a large acute hospital, and one of three tertiary vascular centres in the north east. This post would suit both experienced junior trainees (senior SHO/core trainees) who wish to obtain further experience, prior to appointment on a higher surgical training programme or those pursuing the CESR pathway wishing to further develop their skills and knowledge.

The successful applicant will cover a 1:6 non-resident vascular on-call whilst having regular scheduled theatre opportunities in either our surgeon led hybrid vascular theatre or non-hybrid theatre along with regular exposure to a variety of emergency cases. With 2 operating lists a day, our scope of practice covers the breadth of vascular surgery offering our patient population treatments for aortic aneurysms _(both open and endovascular)_, carotid disease, peripheral arterial disease, renal access and complex venous work.

Active participation is expected in the departmental meetings, rota management and departmental junior doctor teaching programmes.
The successful applicant will be guided in their development by an Educational and Clinical Supervisor, and will have access to a range of educational opportunities both formal and ad hoc along with the opportunity undertake audit, research and QI projects.

Main duties of the job
Deliver high quality patient care to inpatient wards, outpatient clinics and in the theatre environment. We expect the successful applicant to be able to competently undertake the following duties (not exhaustive);

• Lead ward rounds, make and enact management plans for inpatients within the bounds of their competence and experience whilst escalating appropriately to the relevant consultant as required.
• Clear and compassionate communication with patients and families.
• Preparation of patients for theatre and post-operative care
• Assisting in theatre and post-operative care.
• Undertake certain surgical operations and procedures independently (commensurate with level of clinical experience).
• Managing the unselected emergency take and dealing with both routine and emergency admissions.
• Comprehensive patient handover with written and verbal communication as appropriate for all vascular and referred inpatients.
• Help develop new services where needed.
• Clinical Support of more junior members of the vascular team and Specialist Vascular Nurses.
• Be expected to take an active part in continuing medical education and undergraduate teaching.
• Full engagement with Clinical Audit and Clinic Governance is required.
• Attendance and presentation in the vascular MDT.
• Active participation in research and quality improvement projects.
• Participation and co-ordination of the monthly morbidity and mortality meetings.
• Attendance at selected outpatient clinics.

STSFT is seeking a motivated individual to join the team from as a Trust Doctor working at Registrar level at this major Arterial Centre. The post holder will have experience equivalent to that of ST3-6 trainee who wishes to train further in a broad range of vascular and endovascular surgery.

The Unit specialises in surgeon-led/delivered endovascular (percutaneous & hybrid) care, aortic surgery, carotid endarterectomy, lower limb reconstruction and complex venous work. Active participation is expected in the departmental meetings, rota management and departmental junior doctor teaching programmes. Clinical audit projects are actively encouraged in the department, whilst participation in clinical governance and morbidity & mortality meetings is mandatory.

The successful applicant will participate in an on-call rota (1:6) which supports the vascular service exclusively. There will be no on-call commitment to General Surgery. This post represents an excellent opportunity for a junior surgical trainee to gain experience in a large acute hospital with contemporary tertiary vascular emergency and elective practice. This post will be based predominantly at Sunderland Royal Hospital vascular hub, although provision of some clinic and day-case activity may be required at South Tyneside Hospital, Bishop Auckland Hospital, University Hospital of North Durham and Durham Treatment Centre.

This post is not recognised for training purposes by the Postgraduate Deanery.

This is initially a fixed term appointment for 12 months. The successful applicant will work a 1 in 6 vascular on-call with no commitment to General Surgery.
