Job summary
Please note this role is ringfenced to internal Radiology staff only.

Are looking to progress in your career? An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Trainee Sonographer to join our ultrasound team learning to undertake a variety of work including, general medical, vascular, gynaecological, DVT and small parts scans.

This is an excellent opportunity to be part of an exciting busy department which is committed to its staff and their development. We actively encourage and support role development and CPD. The successful candidate will be part of a collaborative team working across the STSFT region which includes the two main hospitals and its peripheral sites.

You must hold a Bsc (or equivalent) in Diagnostic Radiography, a relevant health undergraduate degree, Diploma of the College of Radiographers (Diagnostic) or other relevant qualification to enable eligibility to undertake the PgCert in Medical Ultrasound course.

The successful candidate will be required to attend Teesside University in September 2026 and commit to attending all University classes to attain a PgCert in Medical Ultrasound.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will work under supervision and will not practice autonomously until completion of the PgCert and achievement of agreed clinical competencies.

This a training post and will be paid in line with Annex 21. On successful completion of the training programme, the postholder will progress to a substantive Band 7 Advanced Practitioner Sonographer General Medicine post subject to the achievement of the agreed clinical competencies.

Please refer to the job description attached outlining the responsibilities of the role. In summary the role will involve:
  • Training to undertake and reporting on a variety of ultrasound examinations on a rotational basis.
  • Training to provide a high quality, efficient and effective ultrasound service including unsupervised scanning sessions.
  • Working towards becoming an independent practitioner, performing scans to a high diagnostic standard, prioritising workload, formulating a comprehensive, accurate report, and communicating the results via the agreed method to clinicians/patients and to be accountable for your own professional actions.

We currently offer a 7 day service and there will be an expectation to commit to the weekend rota when qualified.

Job responsibilities
  • To undertake practical training in gynaecological and general medical ultrasound procedures.
  • To complete the Post Graduate Certificate in Medical Ultrasound provided by Teesside University.
  • To attend a minimum of 80% of the taught modules of the PgC.
  • To work as part of a multidisciplinary team providing a high-quality diagnostic ultrasound service whilst maintaining high standards of patient care.
  • To ensure that practice is carried out in accordance with department policies and protocols.
  • To undertake all ultrasound procedures delegated by the advanced practitioners and acquire a good level of skill and knowledge in all aspects of ultrasound encountered on the departmental rotation.

Essential
  • Ability to commit to and undertake PgCert taught programme at Teesside University
  • Working to the professional guidelines for clinical practice as defined in the Statement of Professional Conduct (2025) by the Society of Radiographers;
  • To provide a high quality patient focussed service in line with Trust values.
  • Commitment to own personal development
  • Able to work cross site to support radiology service needs

Desirable
  • Able to work flexible hours with sufficient notice

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
Essential
  • Demonstrate theoretical, practical and professional knowledge of radiography
  • Demonstrate an ability to communicate with patients and other health care workers.
  • Registered/registering on a recognised programme of study leading to eligibility to work at Band 7
  • Commitment to undergo all training requirements of the post.
  • Attendance at professional lectures, study days and workshops
  • Evidence of ongoing CPD, in relation to HPC requirements.
  • Expand upon core knowledge using Evidence Based Practice (EBP)

Desirable
  • Demonstrates in-depth knowledge of a wide range of general and specialised radiography.
  • Demonstrate evidence of good academic skills
  • Knowledge and insight of current trends in radiographic practice and wider NHS issues

Qualifications
Essential
  • BSc (or equivalent) in Diagnostic Radiography,
  • or other relevant health undergraduate degree
  • or
  • Diploma of the College of Radiographers (Diagnostic)
  • Which enables eligibility to undertake the PgCert in Medical Ultrasound course.

Desirable
  • Hold current HCPC registration.
  • Have an up-to-date professional portfolio

Experience
Essential
  • Demonstrate undergraduate experience of working in the field / area of health care

Desirable
  • Demonstrate qualified experience of working in the field of diagnostic radiography
  • Demonstrate experience of medical ultrasound.
