Job summary
South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust have opportunities available for experienced Emergency Clinical Practitioner our existing Injuries and Minor Illness team. Successful applicants will join our Emergency Department at Warwick Hospital and MIU in Stratford-Upon-Avon. This is a great opportunity to join an Emergency Department which is regularly recognised nationally for our high performance and innovative practice to successfully reduce patient waiting times.

We are looking for an enthusiastic ECP with enhanced clinical skills and a commitment to the continuous development and improvement of this service. You will be expected to drive, deliver and develop best practice always motivated by the aim for excellent care for all. Applicants need to have excellent communication skills and be able to work effectively, as an autonomous practitioner and as part of the team, ensuring the delivery of a consistently high standard of care to meet patient needs and Trust objectives.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will be a Nurse, Physiotherapist or Paramedic with enhanced clinical skills and an expert knowledge base, providing a high standard of holistic care in the field of injuries and minor illness.

The post holder will prioritise care needs and work autonomously within agreed protocols managing their own case load, promoting the use of evidence-based practice to ensure the delivery of high quality, efficient care.

The post holder will provide specialist advice and management plans for patients with complex care needs and will provide specialist advice to other members of the multi-disciplinary team (MDT).

The post holder will promote collaborative working relationships to facilitate the rapid delivery of seamless care.

The post holder will work towards the development of the service in collaboration with the ECP Team, ED Head of Nursing, General Manager, Advanced Clinical Practice Lead, Clinicians and other service users, assisting the ENP/ECP Team with any other duties in support of the ECP role and function.

Job responsibilities
Organisational:
  • To monitor, maintain and regularly review acceptable standards of care in conjunction with the ECP Team and other members of MDT, taking appropriate action if standards are not met.
  • Participate in the development of policies, protocols and clinical guidelines necessary to support the development of the service
  • Maintain national and local standards/protocols pertaining to clinical area, taking remedial action as appropriate and reporting deficits to the A&E Matron / Manager as appropriate.
  • Contribute to and influence decisions regarding service delivery through the participation in meetings.
  • Ensure the economical use of all resources.
  • Recognise and manage areas of potential conflict.
  • Recognise and manage any complaints from patients/carers, reporting issues to the A&E Matron / Manager as appropriate.
  • Participate in the setting, implementing and monitoring of organisational/local objectives.

Clinical:
  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate individual programmes of care based on agreed protocols and in consideration of individual need.
  • Provide appropriate strategies for health promotion and health education
  • Be an effective practitioner with the ability to demonstrate clinical expertise
  • Demonstrate holistic assessment, planning, diagnosis, implementation and evaluation of patient care.
  • Request diagnostic tests and undertake interpretation of results
  • Make decisions regarding patient treatment plans independently.
  • Ensure appropriate referral to hospital specialists or other services within the community, in accordance with locally established clinical guidelines.
  • Ensure safe discharge home, with appropriate after care and advice.
  • Work as an Independent Nurse Prescriber, and Supplementary Nurse Prescriber, in accordance with the Nurse Prescribing Formulary.
  • Provide clinical information and advice to all members of the multi-disciplinary team, other agencies, patients and relatives
  • Support the A&E Matron / Manager and Director of Nursing in processes of continuous quality improvement. Formally evaluate the standards of care and lead in the implementation of required change.
  • Act as a role model to all members of staff including medical staff.
  • Demonstrate empathetic interpersonal and communication skills in dealing with patients who present with minor injury or illness, and their carers.
  • Demonstrate own expertise in appropriate areas of role expansion, and support programmes to facilitate this development in others.
  • Promote best practice.
  • Act as patient advocate through the application of ethical, legal and professional knowledge and skills.

Strategic and Service Responsibility:
  • Promote effective communication within the department, to patients, carers, visitors, members of the multi-disciplinary team and external agencies. Receiving and reporting sensitive information, as appropriate taking into account rules of confidentiality.

Governance:
  • To assist in the development of relevant standards, protocols and procedures in conjunction with the multi-professional team, ensuring that clinical practices are evidenced based and benchmarked against best practice.
  • Promote clinical excellence through initiating/participating in setting, maintaining and monitoring standards of care with the clinical governance framework and take part in audit and bench marking activities.
  • To assist in the investigation and take corrective action relating to untoward incidents, accidents and complaints in accordance with Trust policies and procedures.
  • Be aware of child protection guidelines together with strategies to safe guard vulnerable adults. Seek guidance and support form senior staff where necessary.
  • Initiate and participate in the delivery of evidence based care.
  • Maintain awareness of current nursing practice/research with particular reference to own working area, evaluating and disseminating findings.

Qualifications
Essential
  • Current NMC registration / AHP Registration
  • Degree level qualification in health-related subject
  • Post basic qualification at Diploma/Degree level qualification, specific to the ENP role
  • Non-Medical Prescribing
  • Competent in Manchester Triage
  • Minor Injuries and Minor Illness Qualification

  • Leadership/Management qualification

Experience

  • Extensive post-registration experience, to include significant ENP experience in A&E/Minor Injuries Unit at band 6
