Job summary
1. Act as a clinical team leader assuming accountability for managing, co-ordinating and supervising the total service provided within the Theatre department.

2. To assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care.

3. Always act in a manner consistent with the NMC/HCPC Code of professional Conduct and to carry out his/her duties in accordance with the trust and unit policies, guidelines and procedures.

4. Develop and implement local policies, procedures and guidelines.

5. Participate fully as a member of the theatre senior team.

Job responsibilities
To be professionally and legally responsible for all aspects of your own work

Including the management of patients in your care, record keeping and working as an autonomous practitioner.

As clinical team leader you will be held professionally accountable for ensuring safe practice by the theatre team on a shift to shift basis.

Required to maintain a professional portfolio

Personally, responsible for updating and maintaining own skills and knowledge.

Undertake appropriate training and development as identified through an agreed personal development review.

Required to complete Trust mandatory training courses.

Responsible for making sound clinical and managerial decisions in accordance with Unit and Trust protocols, policies and procedures.

Ensure that full use is made of the ability to expand and develop the role of the theatre practitioner in accordance with the requirements of patients, the service and the governing body.

Will possess a recognised teaching and assessing qualification.

Responsible for ensuring calibration and checking of essential equipment required. Adhering to unit policies ensuring competence of staff for safe use of equipment through teaching and supervision of use.

Responsibility for the initiation, development and implementation of new guidelines and procedures utilising research-based evidence.

Act as lead practitioner for specialist areas both clinical and managerial.

Maintain effective discipline amongst staff, reporting problems to the Band 7 and Matron.

Responsibility to supervise, educate and assess the performance of learners and junior staff ensuring educational objectives are met and documentation of progress completed.

Responsibility to contribute as required to the training of junior staff / students on relevant CPD courses and support workers within the clinical area. Maintain an appropriate learning culture and promote clinical excellence whilst on duty.

Responsible for the facilitation of induction and orientation of newly appointed staff as per unit guidelines and maintain mentorship/ supervision throughout their employment.

Dealing with difficult and complex situations including complaints procedures, incident reporting risk management and documenting.

Assist in implementing changes in clinical practice, as new research findings indicate, in liaison with the Band 7 and Matron and members of the multi-disciplinary team.

Management of handover including the facilitation of negotiations, assessment of staff knowledge/skills ensuring appropriate allocation/delegation, skill mix matching supply to demand. Responsible for allocating staff with varying levels of competency to provide the care for critically ill patients taking into account and anticipating where possible expected and unexpected emergency treatment, procedures and transfer.

Responsible for handover for the whole team, communicating precise and important information concerning any problems, messages, duties for next team leader to follow on safely after each shift.
