Join Our Friendly Primary Care Team
We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Pharmacy Technician to join our busy and supportive GP practice team.

This is an excellent opportunity for a registered Pharmacy Technician who is passionate about improving patient care and supporting the safe and effective use of medicines in primary care.

Working closely with our GPs, Clinical Pharmacist, nurses, and wider administrative team, you will play a key role in medicines optimisation, prescription management, medication reconciliation, and patient support.

Main Duties Include:
  • Supporting the management of repeat prescriptions.
  • Completing medicines reconciliation following hospital discharge.
  • Responding to medication-related queries from patients and healthcare professionals.
  • Working with the clinical team to improve prescribing quality and safety.
  • Identifying patients requiring medication reviews and monitoring.
  • Supporting medicines optimisation initiatives and audits.
  • Maintaining accurate patient medication records.

Job Purpose
The Pharmacy Technician will work as part of the multidisciplinary team within the GP surgery to support the safe, effective, and efficient use of medicines. The post holder will assist with medicines optimisation, prescription management, medication reconciliation, and patient support, helping to improve patient outcomes whilst reducing medicines-related risks and workload for clinicians.

The Pharmacy Technician will work under the supervision of a Clinical Pharmacist and alongside GPs, nurses, reception staff, and other healthcare professionals.

Key Responsibilities
Medicines Management and Optimisation
  • Support the delivery of medicines optimisation services across the practice.
  • Conduct medication reviews in line with protocols and under appropriate supervision.
  • Identify patients requiring medication monitoring and recalls.
  • Assist in improving prescribing quality and safety.
  • Support the management of repeat prescribing systems.
  • Ensure medicines are prescribed and monitored appropriately according to local and national guidelines.

Prescription Processing
  • Process prescription requests in a timely manner.
  • Review repeat medication requests against practice protocols.
  • Resolve prescription queries from patients, pharmacies, and clinicians.
  • Support the management of medication shortages and alternatives.
  • Assist with medication synchronisation where appropriate.

Medicines Reconciliation
  • Undertake medicines reconciliation following hospital discharge, outpatient attendance, or transfer of care.
  • Ensure accurate medication records are maintained.
  • Identify and resolve discrepancies between clinical correspondence and patient records.

Patient Support
  • Respond to medication queries from patients within scope of practice.
  • Promote medication adherence and understanding.
  • Provide advice on the safe use, storage, and disposal of medicines.
  • Signpost patients to appropriate healthcare professionals when required.

Clinical Administration
  • Update and maintain accurate patient records using the clinical system.
  • Support audits relating to prescribing and medicines management.
  • Assist in identifying patients eligible for targeted medication reviews.
  • Contribute to quality improvement initiatives.

Governance and Safety
  • Report medication incidents, significant events, and near misses.
  • Ensure compliance with NHS, General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), and practice policies.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and information governance standards.
  • Participate in clinical governance activities and audits.

Professional Development
  • Maintain registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
  • Participate in mandatory training and continuing professional development.
  • Engage in supervision, appraisal, and team meetings.

Experience
Essential
  • Essential Qualifications
  • Registered Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council GPhC.
  • BTEC/NVQ Level 3 in Pharmaceutical Science or equivalent recognised qualification.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.
  • Essential Experience
  • Experience working as a Pharmacy Technician in community pharmacy, hospital pharmacy, or primary care.
  • Experience managing medicines and prescription processes.
  • Knowledge of medicines optimisation principles.
  • Experience using pharmacy or clinical IT systems.
  • Essential Knowledge
  • Understanding of repeat prescribing processes.
  • Knowledge of medicines reconciliation.
  • Understanding of clinical governance and patient safety.
  • Knowledge of confidentiality and data protection requirements.
  • Essential Skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Good organisational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Qualifications

  • Registered Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council GPhC.

  • Evidence of continuing professional development.
