Main duties of the jobAs a Practice Nurse, you will work alongside our GPs, clinicians, and administrative staff to support in delivering patient care.
Some of the clinical responsibilities include:
- General treatment procedures, including venepuncture, observations and ECGs
- Routine immunisations and childhood immunisations
- Smears/cytology
- Health screening and advice

Job descriptionJob responsibilitiesThe aim of the post is to utilise specialist clinical skills and knowledge to assist in providing high standards of care for the practice population. The candidate is expected:
- To always act in a professional manner according to the code of conduct as set out by the NMC
- Maintain accurate patient records of all consultations both in the notes and on the computer.
- To be available for direct access by patients for consultation, care, advice and referral.
- To achieve continued professional development by attending courses and study days so that the highest level of care is maintained.
- To maintain a safe environment with special regard to infection control and the surgery treatment rooms.
- To assist in the teaching and training of others, including nursing colleagues, nursing and medical students and administrative staff
This post will add to our existing multi-professional team (consisting of nurse practitioners, paramedics, practice nurses, HCAs, clinical pharmacist). The post holder will be expected to conduct themselves in a manner appropriate to the role and as a senior representative of the Swan Practice.
Nursing Role Treatment Room Management- Venepuncture
- Safe handling and recording of specimens
- Administering vaccines and prescribed injections as agreed
- Carrying out childhood vaccination programmes to DOH recommendations
- Giving travel advice and administering travel vaccinations to agreed protocols
- Wound assessment and dressings, including removal of sutures/clips
- Dopplers and measuring for hosiery
- Assessing minor injuries, referring/treating as appropriate
- Ear examination
- Warfarin monitoring
- H Pylori testing
- NHS Health Checks
- HRT checks and advice
- Hypertension/CHD monitoring and advice
- Measuring ambulatory blood pressure, advising and recording accordingly
- Fitting 24 hour blood pressure monitoring
- ECGs
- Cervical smear testing and associated administration
- Sexual health advice and contraceptive monitoring
- Educating patients on self-examination.
- Providing dietary and lifestyle advice to patients
- Administering first aid and supporting the team in dealing with clinical emergencies
- Collecting pathological specimens and recording results where appropriate
- Assisting the GPs with minor ops, coil fittings and removals, and Nexplanon fittings and removals
Nursing role Administrative nursing duties- Maintaining stock control of vaccines and monitoring storage temperature
- Maintaining stock control of dressings/venepuncture/minor op equipment
- To undertake other reasonable duties as requested by the Partnership, including attending practice nurse and primary healthcare team meetings
Person SpecificationExperienceEssential- Experience working in Primary Care
Desirable- Experience working in a GP Practice
Clinical Skills/KnowledgeEssential- Wound care/removal of sutures and staples

- Phlebotomy
- New patient medicals
- Understanding the importance of evidence-based practice
- Ability to record accurate clinical notes
- Ability to work within own scope of practice and understanding when to refer to GPs
- Chaperone procedure
- Requesting pathology tests and processing the results, advising patients accordingly
- Understand the requirement for PGDs and associated policy
- Cervical cytology
- Immunisations (routine, childhood and travel)
