Job summary
As a Locum Consultant in Pain Medicine, you will join one of the UK's few dedicated specialist pain centres, based in our purpose-built Pain Management Centre on Cleveland Street. Working alongside a team of experienced consultants and a wide multidisciplinary group of psychologists, physiotherapists, nurses and trainees, you will help patients with complex, persistent and cancer-related pain conditions improve their symptoms and quality of life.

You will have close links to neurology, neurosurgery and other specialist teams, within a Trust known internationally for world-class research and education. Main duties of the job
You will deliver outpatient pain clinics and interventional procedures to a consultant standard, working within a large interdisciplinary team to provide coordinated, evidence-based care for patients with complex pain. You will actively contribute to multidisciplinary and departmental meetings, supervise and support trainees and students, and take part in audit, quality improvement and research relevant to your specialist interests. Strong communication, leadership and organisational skills are essential, along with the ability to build effective working relationships across a busy, multi-professional service.

You will be expected to maintain your own professional standards through CME, appraisal and job planning, and to bring a genuine commitment to patient safety, teaching and service improvement.

Person Specification
Knowledge and Qualifications
Essential

• Eligible for full GMC Registration On GMC Specialist Register for anaesthesia or within 3 months of attainment of CCT in anaesthesia at date of interview
• MB BS [or equivalent] medical qualification
• FRCA or equivalent anaesthetic experience.

Desirable

• FFPMRCA or equivalent Higher Degree

Experience
Essential

• Completed a recognised period of training leading to a CCT in anaesthesia or has gained equivalent experience
• Completed a recognised period of training and experience in Pain Medicine equivalent to what we would expect for Royal College of Anaesthetists for Advanced Pain Training
• Experience in managing patients within an MDT chronic pain service

Desirable

• Completed recognised period of training in a specialist pain clinic setting approved by the Royal College of Anaesthetists for Advanced Pain Training or equivalent
• Have worked within the context of an interdisciplinary / multispeciality team where the candidate has been able to obtain significant experience in the management of patients with complex pain problems
• Evidence of commitment to service improvement/ clinical excellence

Skills and Abilities
Essential

• Demonstrate an ability to perform the specific clinical procedures relevant to post including clinical risk
• Can demonstrate that they have the skills to work within an interdisciplinary / multispecialty pain management service
• Understanding of clinical risk management Clear, logical thinking showing an analytical/scientific approach
• Appropriate level of clinical knowledge for the post Shows knowledge of evidence-informed practice Shows awareness of own limitations
• Evidence of clinical governance & high quality audit

Desirable

• Demonstrate an ability to identify and organise the specific clinical investigations, perform specific clinical procedures, drug manipulations, clinical advice and onward referrals relevant to the post
