Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated Clinical Nurse Specialist or Specialist Practitioner to join our developing Community Respiratory Diagnostic Service. We are seeking an experienced registered nurse or allied health professional with a passion for respiratory care and diagnostic services to support the delivery of high-quality community-based spirometry and respiratory assessment services.

This role offers the opportunity to work autonomously across community settings, providing specialist respiratory assessment, spirometry testing, patient education, and clinical advice whilst contributing to the ongoing development of an innovative and patient-centred service.

As part of a multidisciplinary team, you will play a key role in supporting timely diagnosis, improving patient outcomes, and ensuring patients receive high-quality, evidence-based care closer to home

Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will:

• Deliver high-quality respiratory assessments and diagnostic spirometry in community settings.
• Provide specialist advice, education and support to patients, carers and healthcare professionals.
• Assess, analyse and interpret clinical information to support patient management and care planning.
• Work collaboratively with primary, community and secondary care colleagues to ensure seamless patient pathways.
• Contribute to service improvement, clinical audit and quality initiatives.
• Maintain accurate clinical records and promote safe, effective, patient-centred care.

You will be an experienced and compassionate practitioner committed to delivering excellent patient care and supporting service development.

Essential Requirements

• Registered Nurse (NMC) or Allied Health Professional (HCPC).
• Degree-level qualification or equivalent experience.
• Post-registration experience with evidence of continuing professional development.
• Experience in respiratory, community, diagnostic or specialist clinical services.
• Experience working within multidisciplinary teams.
• Excellent communication, organisational and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work independently.

Desirable Requirements

• Experience performing and interpreting spirometry.
• ARTP accreditation, or willingness to work towards this.
• Postgraduate qualification in a relevant specialty or willingness to undertake further study.
• Knowledge of current respiratory diagnostic pathways

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential

• *Degree in Nursing, Healthcare Science or equivalent.
• *Good standard of general education including GCSE maths and English grade C and above.
• *NMC or HCPC registration.
• *Specialist knowledge of respiratory physiology and diagnostic interpretation.
• *Evidence of specialist knowledge acquired through post-registration training, continuing professional development and/or equivalent experience in respiratory diagnostics
• *Knowledge of ARTP standards for spirometry quality assurance and interpretation.

Desirable

• *ARTP spirometry qualification or evidence of working towards relevant accreditation.
• *Postgraduate study or equivalent specialist development in respiratory care, respiratory diagnostics or clinical assessment.
• *Evidence of leadership, supervision, coaching or clinical educator training

Experience
Essential

• *Relevant post-registration or equivalent clinical experience in respiratory care, respiratory diagnostics or a related clinical service.
• *Experience of undertaking, assessing quality of, interpreting and reporting spirometry or related respiratory diagnostic investigations.
• *Understanding of COPD, obstructive and restrictive respiratory disease, and the relevance of diagnostic findings to clinical pathways.
• *Experience of working within protocols, recognising clinical risk and escalating concerns appropriately.
• *Experience of supporting, supervising or training junior staff, assistants, students or learners.
• *Understanding of community service delivery, patient access, clinic flow, data recording and safe practice across multiple settings.

Desirable

• Experience of community respiratory services, primary care clinics or diagnostic pathway development.
• *Experience of audit, quality assurance, peer review, service evaluation or quality improvement activity.
• *Knowledge of ARTP guidance, NICE COPD guidance, GOLD COPD guidance or relevant British Thoracic Society guidance as applicable to the service.

Additional Criteria

• *Car driver/user for across site and community work
• *Valid UK Driving licence
• *Demonstrate enthusiasm for the specialist area.
• *Demonstrate a professional attitude.
• *An ability to frequently concentrate on patient assessments and treatments.
• *An ability to cope with occasional exposure to distressing/emotional situations.
• *Able to contribute to weekend and evening service.
• *Demonstrate an interest in developing expertise within the clinical areas
