Job summary
The clinical role of the band 6 Occupational Therapist (OT) is to perform specialist cognitive and functional assessment of patients within the Critical Care setting with diverse presentations and complex physical and psychological conditions in a Critical Care Setting.

The post holder will be required to work effectively in collaboration with the full multidisciplinary team, including other health professionals to promote the development, planning and delivery of intervention programmes and training in the specialist clinical area.

To manage, supervise and appraise staff and students within the specialist area.

To contribute to seven day working and extended service hours in specified areas.

To contribute to service development projects.

Main duties of the job

• Be professionally & legally accountable for all aspects of work, including understanding of scope of OT Practice in Critical Care
• Undertake a comprehensive assessment of patients including those with diverse/complex presentations and use advanced clinical reasoning to identify and deliver rehabilitation interventions
• Assess patient understanding of treatment proposals, gain valid informed consent and have the capacity to work within a legal framework with patients who lack capacity to consent
• Use a wide range of verbal and non-verbal communication tools to communicate effectively with patients/carers
• Work within Trust/Royal College of Occupational Therapists guidelines and to have a good working knowledge of national & local standards and monitor own/others quality of practice
• Contribute to service over 7 day period in line with out of hours provision
• Be responsible for maintaining accurate and comprehensive patient treatment records in line with College of Occupational Therapists Standards of Practice/Trust Policy
• Be responsible for maintaining own competency to practice through CPD and maintain a portfolio which reflects personal development including Mandatory Training
• Maintain/develop current knowledge of evidenced based practice in Critical Care
• Ensure your own practice and that of staff under your supervision meet the required professional standards of Occupational Therapy practice
• Comply with organisational/departmental policies & procedures and be involved in reviewing and up-dating

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential

• Degree or diploma in Occupational Therapy
• Registered with HPC
• Evidence of CPD including recent post graduate training relevant to clinical speciality
• Evidence of leadership training
• Good standard of general education including GCSE English and maths grade C or above
• A Levels or equivalent qualification

Desirable

• Fieldwork Educator's certificate or attendance at Clinical Educators Course

Experience
Essential

• Demonstrates clinical experience enabling the post holder to manage a caseload of patients with complex needs in this speciality. This would usually be approximately 12 months and will include experience in discharge planning.
• Team/service development
• A specialist knowledge across a range of OT treatments, routine and non-routine, requiring expertise within the field of occupational therapy
• An ability to cope with a range of complex options, finds solutions, analyse, compare and decide on appropriate course of action.
• Understanding of current legislation and application to OT

Desirable

• Experience of supporting students and more junior therapy staff
• An understanding of discharge routes in the community
