Job summary
Are you ready for your next challenge?! Do you want to work in a great team with supportive colleagues helping deliver exciting trials and treatment options to our patients?

We have an exciting new position within our pharmacy trials team here at University Hospitals Birmingham site to take a lead for our dedicated trials dispensary at our Queen Elizabeth Hospital site. We are looking for an enthusiastic and experienced pharmacy technician to ensure the review, smooth set up and running of our non-cancer trials portfolio. You will work closely with our non-cancer trials pharmacists and a growing team of trials support staff, our research and R&D teams, and trial sponsors. Excellent communication and negotiating skills are essential.

We have a diverse and growing trials portfolio which will allow the post-holder to gain experience including early phase and first-in-human trials. It is an exciting time to be involved in clinical trials at UHB!

The successful applicant will have trials experience and have worked in a busy hospital dispensary with the ability to manage competing workloads and shifting priorities. You will be well-supported and have access to learning, development and training opportunities to allow you to acquire additional skills and knowledge to manage the service and deliver the best possible pharmacy trials service for our patients and service users.

Main duties of the job
  • be responsible for the day-to-day management of the trials pharmacy service from our dedicated trials pharmacy providing a safe, efficient and timely service to our service users
  • demonstrate the ability to work autonomously and within a team with excellent communication skills
  • demonstrate the ability to manage competing workloads and shifting priorities
  • provide leadership to a growing trials support team, providing direction and motivation
  • have a keen eye for detail and have the technical knowledge of medicines management to review trial documents to allow successful review, set up and delivery of our investigational medicinal products

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
  • NVQ Level 3 (Pharmacy Services) plus accredited underpinning knowledge BTEC/ City & Guilds (in Pharmaceutical Science) or equivalent
  • Professional Registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
  • NVQ level 4 in management or equivalent knowledge and experience
  • Evidence of continued Professional Development
  • Accredited Checking Technician
  • Specialist formal training in Good Clinical Practice (GCP)

Desirable
  • Formal Leadership qualification
  • Professional Registration with the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain

Experience
Essential
  • Broad, up-to date and in depth knowledge of issues relating to clinical trials including knowledge of ICHGCP guidelines and Clinical Trials Legislation.
  • High level knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), MHRA licensing requirements, COSHH
  • Demonstrates responsibility for complying with agreed personal development programme to meet set knowledge and competencies.
  • Knowledge of HR policies and procedures.
  • Minimum 6 years post-qualification pharmacy experience.
  • Providing specialist technical advice to others i.e. medicines handling and labelling requirements
  • Working knowledge of a broad range of medicines and their safety issues
  • Experience of working within a multidisciplinary team
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the legal responsibilities of the profession
  • Demonstrates the ability to be able to handle safely and competently pharmaceutical equipment and medicines used in the dispensing process
  • Contribution to education of other staff.

Desirable
  • Managerial experience implementing HR policies and procedures

  • Understanding of clinical governance and its implications for service including quality and audits
  • Able to manage sickness absence in accordance with Attendance Management Policy.
  • Good understanding of Cancer Services
  • Good patient counselling skills
  • Excellent aseptic technique
  • Willing to work cross-site, as required
  • Willing to participate in late night, weekend and on-call service, as required.
