Job summary
An opportunity for a Clinical Fellow within the Urology Department has arisen for a period of 6-12 months depending on training needs. The post will provide a great opportunity to receive further specialist experience in Urology.

Main duties of the job
This post will be required to cross cover both the Malignant and Benign services to ensure the service needs of both are maintained. Within this the post holder will have at least 6 clinical sessions which will include, theatre, diagnosistics, Out Patients, MDTs and ward rounds. The post holder is expected to be flexible with interchanging clinical sessions. An example job plan is included in Appendix 2.

The hospital participates in a busy emergency on-call service, which accepts a full range of urological emergencies.

The Clinical Fellow will be part of the SpR rota, with full prospective cover for annual leave, study leave and bank holidays. There are currently separate rotas for vascular emergencies, hepato-biliary and General Surgery at SpR level. The SpRs elective clinical activity is cancelled when they are on call.

There is a Surgical Assessment Unit which admits all surgical and urological emergency admissions.

Job responsibilities
The Urologyteam comprises 2 senior lecturers and five consultant surgeons, three of whom make a contribution to the hospital's urodynamic service. Special interests within the department include the management of patients requiring partial nephroctomy, retroperitoneal node dissection, renal tumours invading the cava, laproscopic radical prostectomy and neobladders. Over 100 laparoscopic operations are performed each year and the unit performs the full range of general urological operations. The unit also provides support for gynaecological colleagues at the Birmingham Women's Hospital, who undertake major abdominal and pelvic surgery.

In addition to a weekly MDT meeting there is a 'tracker' meeting which ensures all patients under the care of the MDT and currently receiving treatment are reviewed by the team each week.

The urology service is supported by 7 clinical nurse specialists, and the unit comprises a single ward. The unit works as an integrated and flexible unit, cross covering operating days, Ward Rounds and clinics, MDTs, emergencies and holidays. There are close working relationships between all surgical specialties as all surgical wards are in close proximity to each other. Joint consultant operating between specialties is common practice within the hospital.

Qualifications

• Medical Degree from a recognised University
• Full GMC registration

Experience

• A minimum of 4years full time post graduate training (its equivalent gained on a part time basis) or equivalent experience and competencies.
• Previous experience in Urology
