Morecambe Bay Hospitals Trust offers the chance to work with the stunning Lake District on your doorstep, along with excellent transport links to major towns and cities across the North West and beyond.

We are proud to offer a rotational preceptorship programme for newly qualified Band 5 midwives, as well as opportunities for experienced Band 6 rotational midwives to join our dynamic, forward-thinking, and professional team. Covering a wide geographical area that includes both rural and urban communities, our team is dedicated to delivering exceptional care.

Main duties of the job
Midwives are accountable as the lead professional and have a unique relationship with the women, newborn infants, partners and families they care for and support.

Midwives should optimise physiological processes, and support safe psychological, social and cultural situations, working to promote positive outcomes and to anticipate and prevent complications to promote and provide midwifery-led care to women, working as an autonomous practitioner within a multidisciplinary team

  • To provide 24-hour high-quality women centred maternity care
  • To provide effective leadership, optimise teaching opportunities and give support to all grades of staff; planning and directing activities to provide the optimal standard of care
  • To give appropriate education to women and their families and give necessary care, advice and supervision throughout the pregnancy continuum
  • To ensure appropriate referral for mother or child
  • To promote personalised care and choice, giving necessary care advice and supervision to women and their families, wherever possible/appropriate
  • To liaise closely with the person having overall responsibility and to deputise when required
  • To ensure that the clinical area is clean and provides a safe environment for women and their families and staff

About us
We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Our community services for adults are provided in people's homes, community centres, clinics, GP Practices, community hospitals and our main hospitals. Our aim is to work with people to help them remain independent, improve their health and manage their conditions through high quality care, advice and support.

Person Specification
Education and Qualifications - Essential
  • UK NMC Registered Midwifery qualification
  • Degree in Midwifery
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development, e.g. NIPE, PMA training etc

Education and Qualifications - Desirable
  • Current UK driving licence
  • Evidence of PROMPT/ALSO or equivalent
  • CTG/fetal surveillance training

Experience - Essential
  • Ability to prioritise and demonstrate time management and organisational skills
  • Evidence of working autonomously within MDT
  • Evidence of decision making and prioritising care

Experience - Desirable
  • Team working
  • Evidence of teaching experience

Skills, Ability and Knowledge - Essential
  • Understanding of current issues and initiatives + public health/political agendas
  • Knowledge of research
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Evidence of managing people

Skills, Ability and Knowledge - Desirable
  • Budget awareness
  • IT skills/qualification
  • Additional clinical skills, e.g. NLS
