Job summary
INTERNAL ONLY An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and motivated clinician to take on the role of Cancer Clinical Lead. This leadership position plays a key part in supporting the delivery of high-quality cancer services and ensuring that our pathways continue to meet the needs of patients across the organisation. Cancer care is rapidly evolving, and this role will be central to driving improvements in pathway performance, clinical quality and patient experience. Working closely with the Cancer Management Team, tumour group leads, CNS teams and MDT colleagues, the Cancer Clinical Lead will help shape service development, support timely diagnostics, and contribute to meeting national cancer standards. We are looking for an enthusiastic clinician who is passionate about improving cancer outcomes, strengthening multidisciplinary working, and providing strong clinical leadership across pathways. The role will involve contributing to clinical governance, supporting pathway redesign, offering clinical oversight of performance challenges, and helping align local services with regional and national cancer priorities. Main duties of the job
The Trust Cancer Lead Clinician will provide strategic clinical leadership for cancer services within the Trust, ensuring high-quality, safe, and effective care aligned with national standards and the NHS Long Term Plan. The post holder will work collaboratively with the Lead Cancer Nurse, Cancer Services Manager, and Cancer Alliance to deliver performance targets and improve patient outcomes.
Key deliverables:- To provide professional and clinical leadership to those involved in cancer services including the Tumour Group and MDT Leads.
- To develop and facilitate the delivery of the National Cancer Plan and Cancer Waiting Time standards across Divisions , while providing guidance on both local and national cancer priorities.
- Support delivery of the Cancer Quality Agenda including Personalised Care, Quality Standards and the National Cancer Patient Experience Survey.
About us
We operate from three main hospitals-Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre. FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services. WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses. All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, daycase and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay. Our Community Service for adults are provided in people's homes ,community centres, clinics, GP Practices, community hospitals. Our aim is to work with people to help them remain independent , improve their health and manage their conditions through high quality care , advice and support.
Job responsibilities
Clinical Leadership Responsibilities
- Provide clinical leadership for cancer services and represent the Trust at local, regional, and national cancer forums.
- Ensure MDTs function effectively and comply with national quality measures and governance standards.
- Oversee compliance with Cancer Waiting Times, harm reviews, and clinical governance processes.
- Offer professional leadership to Tumour Group and MDT Leads.
- Promote education, training, and continuous professional development for MDT members.
Specific Duties:
- Facilitate delivery of the National Cancer Plan, Cancer Waiting Time standards, and Cancer Quality Standards across Divisions, providing guidance on both local and national priorities.
- Ensure MDTs meet standards outlined in the NHS Long Term Plan for Cancer, including: Cancer Waiting Times Monitoring Dataset Guidance (v12.1), Best Practice Timed Diagnostic Pathways (GIRFT/NHSE, 2024), MDT Streamlining Framework (NHSE/I), Personalised Care Interventions (Recovery Package).
- Maintain robust MDT Terms of Reference and adherence to operational policies.
- Challenge clinical practice and pathway processes to ensure alignment with national best practice and timescales.
- Lead clinical validation of harm reviews for long-wait patients in line with the North West Cancer Long Waits Policy, working with Divisional Leads.
- Contribute to defining the strategic direction for cancer services, considering local and national priorities.
- Act as the named Trust lead clinician for Teenage and Young Adult (TYA) services.
- Support education of non-clinical staff to ensure accurate cancer data recording.
- Participate in delivering the Trusts Quality agenda, including validation of Tumour Site Annual Reports.
- Drive Quality Improvement projects informed by the National Cancer Patient Experience Survey.
- Attend local, regional, and national cancer service meetings.
- Ensure robust clinical governance within cancer services and compliance with external agencies (e.g., NICE, CNST).
- Agree outcome measures for cancer services, monitor medical outcomes, and coordinate clinical audit actions.
- Assist in resolving complaints, litigation, and untoward incidents.
Senior Managerial Responsibilities
- Promote the teams profile internally and externally to maintain commissioner confidence.
- Contribute to planning service changes, developments, and capital projects, including business case preparation.
- Provide expert advice on planning and provision of cancer services.
