Job summaryThis post is based at Staffordshire Children's Hospital at Royal Stoke which is part of the University Hospitals of North Midlands (UHNM) NHS Trust. The paediatric department at UHNM primarily delivers acute paediatric care to the local children of Staffordshire and beyond.
Main duties of the jobWe are seeking a locum Paediatric Critical Care Consultant. The post holder will be providing 8 weeks of consultant of the week (COW) cover to PICU and 8 weeks to HDU per year, and take part in 1 in 5.5 on-call rota for PICU, including evenings and weekends.
In addition, there is also time allocated to do educational supervision and attending departmental meetings.
About usStaffordshire Children's Hospital is part of UHNM which has two sites: Royal Stoke University Hospital, located in Stoke-on-Trent, and County Hospital, located in Stafford. The Staffordshire Children's Hospital is based at the Royal Stoke site, all inpatient services for children are there. Outpatient clinics run at both sites.
The Paediatric Department is one of the largest in the country with a number of sub speciality areas receiving tertiary care referrals. The Trust has a purpose built Children's Centre comprising of inpatient wards, Children's A&E and admissions unit and outpatients department adjacent to the Child Development Centre. The Child Health Directorate provides a wide range of services encompassing acute paediatrics, paediatric and neonatal intensive care, outpatients and community paediatrics. We also provide consultant support to the children's emergency centre and deliver a range of paediatric general and speciality clinics on the County Hospital site.

Job responsibilities- Emergency airway access and intubation,
- Use of the Seldinger technique for gaining secure vascular access,
- Pleural drain insertion,
- Renal support (CVVH),
- Transport of the critically ill child,
- Invasive and non-invasive respiratory support.
It is essential that the post-holder works closely with the members of the PICU team, and the wider multidisciplinary teams within the Trust.
Person SpecificationQualifications and SkillsEssential- Fully registered with GMC
- BLS/PLS/PiLS Trained
- APLS or PALS provider
- Clinical training and experience in Paediatric Intensive Care equivalent to that required for UK CCT in paediatrics.
Desirable- A post-graduated qualification e.g MRCPCH, MSc, DCH, DCCH, MBA or other equivalent diplomas.
- A post graduate qualification eg MD, PhD
- Entry onto the specialty register for Paediatric Intensive Care Medicine
Clinical ExperienceEssential- Clinical training and experience in general paediatrics equivalent to that required for UK CCST in paediatrics.
- Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients
- Level 3 safeguarding training
Desirable- Experience and understanding of using evidence based medicine and clinical audit to support decision making
- Experience in the management of children with life limiting conditions, both malignant and non-malignant.
- Experience in managing end of life Audit or service improvement project in end of life care.
Management and Administrative ExperienceEssential- Willingness to take part in teaching
- Evidence of continuing professional development
- Experience of supervising junior medical staff
- Ability to teach clinical skills
- Commitment to continuing medical education
Desirable- Formal training in research or teaching methods
- Training the trainers course
