Job summary
An opportunity has arisen for a Band 5/6 Registered Biomedical Scientist to join our dedicated Haematology and Blood Transfusion team at the Royal Stoke University Hospital, a key hub within the North Midlands and Cheshire Pathology Services (NMCPS). The Royal Stoke University Hospital provides essential general and acute services to a local population of 1.1 million, alongside specialised care and major trauma services for more than 3 million people across the region. Consequently, our laboratory handles an exceptionally high volume of complex casework, serving as a vital, fast-paced area where your skills will directly impact critical patient outcomes every day.

Main duties of the job
As a flexible member of the laboratory team, you will perform, validate, and interpret complex diagnostic analyses across all departmental areas in strict accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Utilising your strong clinical understanding of disease processes and medical terminology, you will check sample suitability and prioritise urgent workloads to meet critical patient care targets, such as A&E and cancer pathways. Additionally, you will support quality compliance by managing internal and external quality control, conducting equipment calibrations, and executing preventative maintenance and troubleshooting. Working safely within the Pathology Quality Policy, you will actively contribute to the ongoing review of SOPs for accreditation purposes and diligently report any health, safety, or incident data through internal CAPA channels.

Job responsibilities
We have an exciting opportunity for a qualified HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist to join our team based at Royal Stoke University Hospital. You must be a strong team player who can effectively contribute to the on-going delivery and development of the service.

Please note the post holder will be required to participate in a shift rota, following a suitable period of training. Working days, nights, weekends, and bank holidays which is an integral part of this post.

Essential

• Previous experience of working in a Laboratory environment
• Demonstrate broad knowledge of Haematology techniques
• Familiarity with IT systems in Pathology
• Experience of working in a team and alone
• Experience of working to Standard Operating Procedures (SOP); contributing to their review and implementation
• Ability to work under pressure, prioritise workload and work to deadlines.

Qualifications
Essential

• BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science or equivalent
• Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
• Evidence of Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

Desirable

• Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) Specialist Diploma in Haematology & Blood Transfusion or equivalent
