Exciting opportunities to join our small highly skilled team, working in a busy Ophthalmic department. All training is provided in this exciting and interesting specialty.

Main duties of the job

• To plan and be responsible for own patient caseloads, 4-6 sessions per week, within the U/C department.
• Undertake 1-3 nurse-led clinics per week which are not directly supervised.
• Work within professional Codes of Practice and guidelines and be accountable for own professional actions.
• Undertake additional training for enhanced role within the department in both Urgent care and Outpatients.
• To manage on a rotational rostered basis overall responsibility for the department in the absence of the Nurse Manager.

Job responsibilities

• Undertake management of a Telephone Triage system by way of assessing patients health problems, educating and advising patients, making safe and appropriate decisions and offering an appointment if necessary.
• Analyse and make knowledge based decisions in relation to acute ophthalmic and other patient related conditions and situations; subsequently taking appropriate remedial action.
• Manage own and supervise others caseload within the urgent care department (approx. 6-8 patients per session) and co-ordinate patient journey across divisions and organisational boundaries.
• Assess and diagnose the cause of a patients condition; thereafter provide the appropriate nursing intervention and care, evaluate and discharge.
• Provide patients with relevant information and any details required for their onward care pathway.
• Empower patient choice and involvement initiating appropriate action.
• Sensitively communicate information to patients, relatives and carers in a private environment. i.e. loss of eye or loss of vision, on occasions life threatening or life changing conditions, sexually transmitted disease, effects of dystonia and facial disfigurement.
• Supervise the maintenance of accurate, legible and up to date patient records using trust appropriate systems.

Qualifications
Essential

• Proven current registration with the NMC.

Desirable

• Proven evidence of ophthalmic Nurse Practitioner training and assessment.
• Intravitreal Injection training
• Leadership/management training.

Knowledge & Experience
Essential

• Demonstrable experience of using a range of IT applications including databases and Microsoft applications.
• Proven evidence of recent Continuing Professional Development.

Desirable

• Demonstrate proven management abilities

Aptitude & Abilities
Essential

• Is able to work autonomously and as part of a team.
• Proven ability to prioritise workload, delegate and support others.

Desirable

• Overview of change processes within the trust.
